Union Bank of the Philippines, Inc., more commonly known as UnionBank, is one of the universal banks in the Philippines and the ninth largest bank in the country by assets. UnionBank is a joint consortium among the Aboitiz Group, Insular Life, and Social Security System. It started operations in 1981 and became a commercial bank on January 19, 1982. The Union Bank (1828)
The Union Bank was a bank founded in the year 1828 in British India by Prince Dwarkanath Tagore. The bank was the fourteenth oldest bank in India. History Founding In the 19th century India, Prince Dwarkanath Tagore owned his own trading firm Carr, Tagore and Company. He then separated the financial activities of his firm into a separate banking company. As a result, the Union Bank was founded in 1828. The bank was formed by the merger of two other banks: The Commercial Bank and The Calcutta Bank. Dwarkanath was the very first Indian to become a director of an Indian bank. All of the previous Indian banks had European directors and founders. Dwarkanath was assisted by his Parsi friend Rustomjee Cowasjee, a notable businessman. The bank collapsed in 1848. The Union Banking Corporation (UBC) was a New York investment bank incorporated in 1924 in the United States. During World War II, under the U.S. Trading with the Enemy Act, the United States government seized the bank's assets pending investigation of the bank's business involving a former party member of the Nazi government in Germany, Fritz Thyssen. The now-former U.S. Senator Prescott Bush was a founding member and is included among its seven directors whose entire collective shareholdings in Union Banking Corp. were shares wholly owned by, and held on behalf of, the Thyssen empire's Bank voor Handel en Scheepvaart in Rottendam. Union Banks
Union Banks (Pagkakaisa Banks and Reefs) is a large drowned atoll in the center of Dangerous Ground (South China Sea), Dangerous Ground in the Spratly Islands in South China Sea, west of the Philippine coast, containing islands and reefs whose ownership remains Spratly Islands dispute, disputed and controversial. The closest atoll is Tizard Bank, due north of Union Banks. There are only two natural islands on the rim of the reef, Sin Cowe Island and Sin Cowe East Island. The Union Bank of Tallahassee, Florida was established around 1830 and the bank building constructed for it in 1841. It is Florida's oldest surviving bank building. It is located at Apalachee Parkway and Calhoun Street and is now a museum and archive and research center for African American history.
