UnFreedom Day
UnFreedom Day is an unofficial annual event that is marked every year on or around 27 April. UnFreedom Day is organised to counter the official South African holiday called Freedom Day, an annual celebration of South Africa's first democratic elections in 1994. UnFreedom Day was started by Abahlali baseMjondolo in Durban in 2006. It has become a day of education in which films, discussions, speeches and performances play a major role along with marches and rallies, attracting thousands of participants. The point of the day is to contest the claim that the poor are free in South Africa have attracted crowds of thousands. The day is now marked in different parts of the country and by various organisations. In 2023 Abahlali held UnFreedom events in the KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Gauteng provinces. UnFreedom Day Durban 2023
''Unfreedom: Blemished light'' (Hindi title: ''Dagh Ujala'') is a 2014 Indian drama film by Raj Amit Kumar, which was released in North America on 29 May 2015. Faiz Ahmad Faiz's poem, "Ye Dagh Dagh Ujala", is the inspiration behind the film. The film stars Victor Banerjee, Adil Hussain, and Preeti Gupta. The story revolves around a Muslim fundamentalist in New York who kidnaps a liberal Muslim scholar with an intent to kill, while a closeted lesbian in New Delhi kidnaps her bisexual lover with the intent of being together. The resulting torture and violence lead to a brutal struggle of identities against "unfreedom". In India, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) refused to certify the movie for public release in India. No Land! No House! No Vote! is a campaign by a number of poor people's movements in South Africa that calls for the boycotting of the vote and a general rejection of party politics and vote banking. The name is meant to imply that if government does not deliver on issues important to affected communities (such as land and housing) these movements will not vote. History The ''No Land! No House! No Vote!'' campaign began as a national campaign by the South African Landless Peoples Movement (LPM) in 2004. Originally called the ''No Land! No Vote!'' campaign, the Landless People's Movement and the National Land Committee argued that voters have to be registered in their home ward to vote and that it would be impossible to vote if families were under threat of eviction or had no secure tenure. Kennedy Road, Durban
Kennedy Road is an informal settlement in Durban (eThekwini), in the province of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. Formed in the late 1970s or early 1980s, the settlement was mentioned by the African National Congress (ANC) after the end of apartheid but amenities were not improved. The site is mostly not connected to sanitation or electricity. Dissatisfaction with local councillors led to 2005 protests including a road blockade, out of which the shack dwellers movement Abahlali baseMjondolo (AbM) formed. In 2009, an AbM meeting was attacked resulting in two deaths and a court case. More recently, the municipality has improved facilities and promised to relocate inhabitants. EMacambini
eMacambini is a rural area in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa which is mostly populated by members of the Macambini clan. It is near Mandeni on the Zululand coast, just north of Durban and close to the new King Shaka International Airport. Threatened eviction In November 2008, the community of eMacambini held a 5,000 strong march of about 10 km to protest against the proposed AmaZulu World development slated to be built by Ruwaad Holdings from Dubai. Earlier in the year, Ruwaad had signed a memorandum of understanding with KZN Premier S’bu Ndebele. The planned R44m development by Ruwaad would have occupied 16,500ha. Freedom Day (South Africa)
Freedom Day is a public holiday in South Africa celebrated on 27 April. It commemorates the first post-apartheid elections held on that day in 1994 and the day on which the new constitution was introduced. The elections were the first national elections where everyone of voting age of over 18 from any race group, was allowed to vote. It is one of the seventeen public holidays determined by the Public Holidays Act (No. 36 of 1994). Landless People's Movement
The Landless People's Movement is an independent social movement in South Africa. It consisted of rural people and people living in shack settlements in cities. The Landless People's Movement boycotted parliamentary elections and had a history of conflict with the African National Congress. The Landless People's Movement was affiliated to Via Campesina internationally and its Johannesburg branches to the Poor People's Alliance in South Africa.
