Ulster Transport Authority
The Ulster Transport Authority (UTA) ran rail and bus transport in Northern Ireland that operated from 1948 until 1967. Formation and consolidation The UTA was formed by the , which merged the Northern Ireland Road Transport Board (NIRTB) and the Belfast and County Down Railway (BCDR). Added to this by the Ireland Act 1949 ( 12, 13 & 14 Geo. 6. c. 41) was the Northern Counties Committee (NCC), owned by the British Transport Commission's Railway Executive since its previous owner, the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS), had been nationalised in 1948 by the Transport Act 1947 ( 10 & 11 Geo. 6. c. 49). Branch railway closures In January 1950 the UTA closed almost the entire BCDR network except the Bangor branch line. Castlewellan () is a small town in County Down, in the south-east of Northern Ireland close to the Irish Sea. It is beside Castlewellan Lake and Slievenaslat mountain, southwest of Downpatrick. It lies between the Mourne Mountains and Slieve Croob. It had a population of 2,782 people in the 2011 United Kingdom census, 2011 census. Ballymena And Larne Railway
The Ballymena and Larne Railway was a narrow gauge railway in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The first part opened in July 1877 and regular passenger services began in August 1878, the first on the Irish gauge railways. Passenger services ended in 1933 and the last part of the railway closed in 1950. Routes From east to west, the railway ran for between Larne and Ballymena ''via'' Kilwaughter, Headwood, Ballyboley, Ballynashee, Collin, Moorfields, Kells and Harryville. Ballycastle Railway
Ballycastle Railway was a narrow gauge railway line which ran from Ballycastle to Ballymoney, both in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. History Ballycastle Railway opened in October 1880 and ran from Ballymoney, on the Belfast and Northern Counties Railway (BNCR), later Northern Counties Committee (NCC), main line to Derry, to Ballycastle. It was never a very profitable enterprise and closed down for a period in 1924, until rescued by the NCC, which took it over completely. Services mainly consisted of three return journeys each day, taking between 50 minutes and an hour. At the start there were three Black Hawthorn 0-6-0ST engines and two Kitson 4-4-2T engines arrived in 1908. Cookstown Railway Station (NCC)
Cookstown railway station was one of the two stations serving Cookstown in County Tyrone in Northern Ireland. History The Belfast and Ballymena Railway (BBR) opened the station on 10 November 1856 as the terminus of an extension to their existing Randalstown branch line. In 1860 the BBR became the Belfast and Northern Counties Railway (BNCR), which would go on to be absorbed by the Midland Railway in 1903, becoming the Northern Counties Committee (NCC). In 1879, the Great Northern Railway (GNR) reached Cookstown by way of Dungannon and Stewartstown. Though located next door to the BBR station on Molesworth Street, the GNR station was completely separate. A rail connection between the two stations existed, but for transfer of goods wagons only. There were no through passenger workings. It was closed to passengers by the Ulster Transport Authority on 28 August 1950 and to goods on 2 May 1955. Limavady Railway
The Limavady Railway was a railway line that branched off from the Belfast–Derry line at Limavady Junction near Ballykelly to Limavady. The line was later extended a further 7 miles to Dungiven. The Limavady to Dungiven section of the line was closed on 3 July 1950. The initial branch was opened on 29 December 1852 by the Londonderry and Coleraine Railway and was extended to its final terminus, Dungiven, on 4 July 1883; the extension was closed for passenger traffic on 1 January 1933 and finally closed altogether on 3 July 1950, with the rest of the line losing its passenger service the same day. The Limavady section, having already lost its passenger service, was closed entirely on 2 May 1955.
