Ulster Senior Schoolgirls' Cup
The Ulster Senior Schoolgirls' Cup is an annual competition competed for by schools affiliated to the Ulster Hockey Association, a branch of the Irish Hockey Association. The competition has been in existence since 1907 and is currently sponsored by the Belfast Telegraph. Since 1980, the winners have qualified to represent Ulster in the Kate Russell All-Ireland Schools Hockey Cup. The most successful school is Methodist College Belfast with 21 wins (18 outright wins and 3 shared wins). The current holder is Portadown College. Trophy The trophy is a small silver cup mounted on a plinth on a wooden shield. Format The competition is run through an open draw format. The first round is held in November, progressing through to a showpiece final held in early March. The final attracts a crowd of roughly 1000 people, which is large for an attendance at a hockey match in Ulster. Friends School Lisburn
Friends' School, Lisburn is a Quaker voluntary grammar school in the city of Lisburn, Northern Ireland, founded in 1774. History Friends’ School Lisburn was founded – as The Ulster Provincial School – on the basis of a bequest in 1764 of a prosperous linen merchant, John Hancock, who left £1,000 for the purchase of land in or near Lisburn on which to build a school for the children of Quakers. at Prospect Hill were purchased from the Earl of Hertford. In 1774, the first headmaster, John Gough, took up his post. In 1794 The Ulster Provincial School became the responsibility of the Ulster Quarterly Meeting, the body representing the Religious Society of Friends in Ulster. Coleraine High School
Coleraine High School was an all-girls' grammar school located in Coleraine, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The High School, or Gordonville Ladies' Academy as it was originally known, was founded in 1875 in Alexander Terrace, Coleraine, by Mrs Long, assisted by her daughter and staff. From 1924 until 1959, the school, as a voluntary grammar school, was controlled by a board of governors. In 1959, the day school was transferred to the County Londonderry Education Committee, and then, in the local government re-organisation of 1973, to the North Eastern Education and Library Board as a controlled grammar school. The Boarding Department remained the responsibility of the Board of Governors until its closure in 1997. Wallace High School (Lisburn, Northern Ireland)
The Wallace High School is an 11–18 co-educational voluntary grammar school and sixth form in Lisburn, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. History It was founded in 1880 by a bequest from the estate of Sir Richard Wallace, local landowner, Unionist MP and philanthropist, and was originally named Lisburn Intermediate and University School. It was built on a site fronting the Antrim Road. A board of trustees took charge in 1900 to oversee the development of the growing school and, when they renamed it in 1942 in memory of its founder, they adopted the word ''Esperance (Hope)'' as the school's motto from the Wallace coat of arms. The post-war years witnessed rapid growth in pupil numbers and consequent accommodation provision. Down High School
Down High School is a controlled co-educational grammar school located in Downpatrick, County Down, Northern Ireland. The school has students from the ages of eleven to eighteen in the senior school — of which there are 953 students (2024/25). On 21 July 2014, John O'Dowd, the education minister, approved a development proposal to close the preparatory department of Down High School and it closed on 30 June 2014. There are roughly 250 pupils engaged in A-level study in the sixth form. In July 2015, some £20 million was granted by the education minister to begin the new build project in 2017. Royal School Dungannon
The Royal School is a mixed boarding school located in Dungannon, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. It was one of a number of 'free schools' created by James I of England, James I (otherwise known as James VI of Scotland) in 1608 to provide an education to the sons of local merchants and farmers during the plantation of Ulster. Originally set up in Mountjoy near Lough Neagh in 1614, it moved to its present location in 1636. It was founded as a boys school but became coed in 1986 when the school amalgamated with the Dungannon High School for Girls. Larne Grammar School
Larne Grammar School is a co-educational voluntary grammar school located in Larne, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. Founded in 1886 by Sir Edward Coey and John Crawford, it has around 760 Student, pupils and 50 teaching staff. History The school was opened by Mr. John Crawford and Sir Edward Coey in 1887. Mr. R.M. Jones M.A. opened the school to its first pupils. Larne Grammar School was set up as an all boys fee paying and boarding school. Ballyclare High School
Ballyclare High School is a co-educational, non-denominational grammar school in Ballyclare, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. There are approximately 1,200 pupils at the school, taught by around 80 teachers. History The school was opened in the 1890s in the village of Doagh, a few miles south-west of Ballyclare. Rainey Endowed School, known colloquially as "The Rainey", is a voluntary grammar school in Magherafelt, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Omagh Academy
Omagh Academy is a grammar school in Omagh, County Tyrone, located at 21-23 Dublin Road. The school currently has 670 pupils. The school is one of the top performing grammar schools in Northern Ireland and is ranked one of the top 30 Grammar Schools in the UK. In 2014, there was a 100% pass rate at GCSE Level, 82% pass rate at A-Level, and 69% achieved 5 A*-C grades at GCSE.
