Ula is a small seaside village in Larvik Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. The village is located in the Tjølling area of the municipality. It is located about to the south of the village of Hem and about to the southeast of the village of Tjøllingvollen. The village had a population (2000) of 228 and a population density of . Since 2002, the population and area data for this village area has not been separately tracked by Statistics Norway because the population dropped below 200 people. The village and harbour become busier during summer months, due to an influx of people occupying Ula's many vacation homes and campgrounds. A number of protected and preserved 18th-century wooden homes are located along the main beach. Tjøllingvollen or Viksfjord is a village in Larvik Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. The village is located about to the east of the town of Larvik. The village of Hem lies about to the northeast, the village of Verningen lies about to the north, and the coastal village of Ula lies about to the southeast. Tjølling Church is located in the north part of the village. The Vestfoldbanen railway line historically stopped at the Viksfjord Station on the south side of the village, but the station closed in 1978. Anders Jacob Johansen
Anders Jacob Johansen (1815 – November 28, 1881, surname also Johanessen or Johannessøn), known as Ulabrand, was a maritime pilot who lived in Ula, Norway, Ula in Vestfold, Norway. He served as pilot in Ula from about 1850 until he perished in a fall storm in 1881, when his pilot boat was lost in the open sea south of Tjøme for unknown reasons. At the end of the 19th century, the pilots themselves had to hail ships needed piloting. The pilot's fee was paid to the one that arrived first and brought the ship safely into port. The pilots therefore used lookout points with a good vantage to be able to detect boats early on their way into the Oslofjord, Oslo Fjord. There was ruthless competition between them, often at risk of life, to reach the ships. The pilots helped bring many boats into safety in port during storms in the Skagerrak. Pilot Station
A pilot station is an onshore headquarters for maritime pilots, or a place where pilots can be hired from. To get from a pilot station to an approaching ship, pilots need to use fast vessels to arrive in time, i.e. a pilot boat. History Historically, pilot stations would often be found on an island or other point at sea near a harbor, giving pilots ample time to transfer to an approaching boat. Two boats would rotate and operate around the clock. Pilot boats would stay at a station for up to a week. It was typical that up to six pilots would be on a boat to board incoming vessels. Kjerringvik
Kjerringvika is a village located in Inderøy Municipality in Trøndelag county, Norway. It is located on the shore of the Trondheimsfjord at the Skarnsundet strait, about northeast of the village of Mosvik. The village is located along the Norwegian County Road 755 at the western end of the Skarnsund Bridge. The bridge was built in 1991 to replace the old Vangshylla–Kjerringvik Ferry which was in service from 1958–1991. Larvik (town)
is a town/city in Larvik Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. The town is the administrative centre of the large municipality which stretches inland for over from the coast. The town is located near the Skaggerak coast, wedged between the Larviksfjorden to the south, the lake Farris to the north, and the river Lågen along the east side of the town. The town was established in 1671. The town became a self-governing municipality on 1 January 1838 under the formannskapsdistrikt law.
