Uinta Highline Trail
The Uinta Highline Trail is a trail in the Uinta Mountains of Utah that traverses the range from east to west. The trail passes through expansive alpine landscapes dominated by metasedimentary rocks sculpted by past glaciers. The broad glacial basins are dotted by hundreds of lakes. Route The Uinta Highline Trail extends along the east–west oriented crest of the Uinta Mountains. The eastern terminus is at McKee Draw along U.S. Route 191, between Flaming Gorge Reservoir and Vernal. The western terminus is at Hayden Pass near Mirror Lake on Utah Route 150;. The trail crosses eight named passes that exceed elevation and many other smaller saddles and ridges. Between these high points, the trail drops into broad, glacially carved basins and valleys. Uinta Mountains
The Uinta Mountains ( ) are an east-west trending chain of mountains in northeastern Utah extending slightly into southern Wyoming in the United States. As a subrange of the Rocky Mountains, they are unusual for being the highest range in the contiguous United States running east to west, and lie approximately east of Salt Lake City. The range has peaks ranging from , with the highest point being Kings Peak, also the highest point in Utah. The Mirror Lake Highway crosses the western half of the Uintas on its way to Wyoming. Ashley National Forest
Ashley National Forest is a National Forest located in northeastern Utah and southwestern Wyoming. Within the Forest's bounds are (with in Utah and in Wyoming) of vast forests, lakes, and mountains, with elevations ranging from . The forest covers portions of Daggett, Duchesne, Summit, Uintah, and Utah counties in Utah and Sweetwater County in Wyoming. Mirror Lake (Uinta Mountains)
Mirror Lake is a lake in the high Uinta Mountains in Utah. It is a popular fishing and recreation spot. The lake contains three species of trout: rainbow, brook, and tiger. The lake has a Forest Service campground, picnic facilities, and a boat ramp for non-motorized watercraft. Access to the lake is by the Mirror Lake Highway, which is only open during the summer (other than by snowmobile). The lake's name comes from the near-perfect reflection of the surrounding mountains and trees seen from a roadside overlook or from the shore. The shoreline is owned by the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Mirror Lake includes the adjacent Mirror Lake Campground, with latrines, day-use areas and 94 campsites. Vernal
Vernal, the county seat and largest city in Uintah County, Utah, Uintah County is in northeastern Utah, approximately east of Salt Lake City and west of the Colorado border. As of the 2010 United States Census, 2010 census, the city population was 9,089. The population has since grown to 10,370 as of the 2018 population estimate. History Vernal, unlike most Utah towns, was not settled by Mormon Settlers. Brigham Young sent a scouting party to the area Uintah Basin in 1861 and received word back the area was good for nothing but nomad purposes, hunting grounds for Indians, and "to hold the world together."
