UNISFA
The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) is a United Nations peacekeeping force in Abyei, which is contested between the Republic of Sudan and the Republic of South Sudan. UNISFA was approved on 27 June 2011 by the United Nations Security Council in United Nations Security Council Resolution 1990 after a flareup in the South Kordofan conflict earlier in June 2011. The Ethiopian Army was the largest contributor of personnel, and until 2022, the only contributor of individual troops. In February 2022 UNISFA was reconfigured into a multinational force with the arrival of a Ghanaian Battalion under Major Enoch Awudu. As a multinational force troops from a number of other countries have served in Abeyei, including Ghana, Nepal and Vietnam. Birhanu Jula Gelalcha
Birhanu Jula Gelalcha (, born 1965) is an Ethiopian military officer who is the current Chief of General Staff of the Ethiopian National Defense Force since 4 November 2020. He served as the Force Commander of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) from 2014 to 2016. Biography Birhanu holds a bachelor's degree from Alpha University College and a master's degree from Greenwich University, both in Addis Ababa. In 2006, Birhanu worked with the UN Mission in Liberia and held the position of Sector Commander. He has also held various other positions with the army including with the Ministry of National Defence, the Cadet School and Brigade Operations. Lieutenant General Yohannes Gebremeskel Tesfamariam is an Ethiopian lieutenant general who was the Head of Mission and Force Commander of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) from 2013-2014. United Nations Security Council Resolution 1990, adopted unanimously on June 27, 2011, after recalling all previous resolutions on the situation in Sudan and the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, the Council established the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) in the disputed Abyei region between Sudan and South Sudan. The resolution was passed after a conflict between the Sudan People's Liberation Army/Movement (SPLA/M) and Sudanese army in the South Kordofan region, and in the run-up to the declaration of independence by South Sudan from the north. Agok
Agok () is a border town in the disputed Abyei region near the South Sudanese border. Due to the civil war in Sudan between 2007 and 2011 many of the residents in South Sudan fled to Agok which is the reason why 23,000 of the 30,000 total people in the town are Internally Displaced. This number used to be much higher with around 90,000 people were displaced in Agok.
