The United Nations Statistical Commission (StatCom) is a Functional Commission of the United Nations Economic and Social Council, established in 1946. The Statistical Commission oversees the work of the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD). Its 24 member states are elected by the Economic and Social Council on the basis of the following geographical distribution: African states (5), Asian States (4), Eastern European States (4), Latin American and Caribbean States (4), Western European and other States (7). In 2024, the Economic and Social Council decided to progressively increase the number of members in the Commission from 24 to 54 until 2028, which aims to enhance representation and inclusivity. Member states are usually represented by their chief statistician. Since 2000 the Commission meets every year. Claus Moser
Claus Adolf Moser, Baron Moser, (24 November 1922 – 4 September 2015) was a British statistician who made major contributions in both academia and the Civil Service. He prided himself rather on being a non-mathematical statistician, and said that the thing that frightened him most in his life was when Maurice Kendall asked him to teach a course on analysis of variance at the LSE. Life Claus Adolf Moser was born in Berlin in 1922. His father was Dr Ernst (Ernest) Moser (1885–1957), owner of the private bank Ernst Moser & Co. in Berlin (est. 1902, liquidated in 1938). His mother was Lotte (née Goldberg, 1897–1976), a talented amateur musician. In 1936 he moved to England with his parents and his brother Heinz Peter August. World Statistics Day
World Statistics Day is an international day to celebrate statistics. Created by the United Nations Statistical Commission, it was first celebrated on 20 October 2010. The day is celebrated every five years. , 103 countries celebrate a national Statistics Day, including 51 African countries that jointly celebrate African Statistics Day annually on 18 November. India celebrates its statistics day on 29 June, the birthday of the statistician Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis. The Royal Statistical Society in the UK also launched its ''getstats'' statistical literacy campaign on the same day at 20:10 (on 20 October 2010). The Voorburg Group on Services Statistics was created in 1986, in response to a request from the United Nations Statistical Office (UNSO), for assistance in developing services statistics. The first meeting, hosted by the Netherlands Statistical Office (CBS) was held in January 1987 in Voorburg, Netherlands, from which the Group derives its name. Herbert Marshall (statistician)
Herbert Marshall (1888–1977) was a Canadian academic, statistician, and third Dominion Statistician from 1945 until his retirement in 1956. Early years Herbert Marshall graduated from the University of Toronto in 1915 and worked for two years as part of that university's economics staff. His academic was interrupted by military service during World War I. Career at the Dominion Bureau of Statistics He began his 35-year career at the Dominion Bureau of Statistics in 1921 as a prices statistician. He was later responsible for directing work in the balance of international payments and Canadian-American investment flows. In 1939, his work in the area of international trade had been recognized by the award of the Gold Medal of the Professional Institute of the Civil Service. Philip Idenburg
Philippus Jacobus Idenburg (Hillegersberg, 26 November 1901 – Wassenaar, 29 December 1995) was a Dutch people, Dutch educationalist and statistician. Philip joined the Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (the Dutch Central Bureau of Statistics) where he worked except for a short break until retirement in 1966. In 1940 he was involved with Gerd Arntz in salvaging the work of the Mundaneum in The Hague, transferring the material to the Dutch Foundation for Statistics which he set up under the leadership of Jan van Ettinger and Arntz. In 1943 Arntz was conscripted into the German Army, and when he returned to the Netherlands in 1946, Idenburg vouched for him and enabled him to return to his previous job.
