UMass Minutemen
The UMass Minutemen are the athletic teams that represent the University of Massachusetts Amherst; strictly speaking, the ''Minutemen'' nickname applies to men's teams and athletes only — women's teams and athletes are known as ''Minutewomen''. The Minutemen and Minutewomen compete in NCAA Division I sports competition primarily as members of the Atlantic 10 Conference. UMass is one of only 16 universities in the nation that plays Division I FBS football and Division I men's ice hockey (six of which are in the Big Ten Conference). The nickname is also applied to club teams that do not participate within the NCAA structure. UMass will join the Mid-American Conference as a full member beginning in 2025; the men's football team had previously competed as a football-only member in that conference from 2013 to 2015. The University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass Amherst) is a public land-grant research university in Amherst, Massachusetts, United States. It is the flagship campus of the University of Massachusetts system and was founded in 1863 as the Massachusetts Agricultural College. Atlantic 10 Conference
The Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) is a collegiate List of NCAA conferences, athletic conference whose schools compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) NCAA Division I, Division I. The A-10's member schools are located mostly on the East Coast of the United States, East Coast and Midwestern United States, Midwest of the United States: Illinois, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York (state), New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Although some of its members are state-funded, half of its membership is made up of private, Catholic Church, Catholic institutions. UMass Minutemen Ice Hockey
The UMass Minutemen Ice Hockey team is a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) NCAA Division I, Division I men's college ice hockey program that represents the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The Minutemen are a member of Hockey East. They play at the 8,387-seat William D. Mullins Memorial Center (known as the Mullins Center) in Amherst, Massachusetts. History Pond history The centrally located pond on the UMass campus was once used for multiple purposes. In the winter students and faculty would cut out blocks of ice to use for refrigeration and annual tug-of-war games between sophomores and freshmen were hosted during the spring months. In 1909 the first formal ice hockey team began playing on the pond as well. UMass Minutemen Football
The UMass Minutemen football team represents the University of Massachusetts Amherst in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The Minutemen compete as an NCAA Division I FBS independent schools, FBS independent. Since 1965, their home games have been played at Warren McGuirk Alumni Stadium on the university's campus in Hadley, Massachusetts. UMass began play in 1879 and have since appeared in three NCAA Division I Football Championship, FCS National Championship games, winning the title in 1998. The Minutemen began a two-year Football Bowl Subdivision transition period in 2011, becoming bowl eligible in 2013. UMass began its FBS tenure as an associate member of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) but left the conference after the 2015 season rather than become a full member. UMass Minutewomen Field Hockey
The UMass Minutewomen field hockey team represents the University of Massachusetts Amherst in the sport of field hockey in the NCAA Division I level Atlantic 10 Conference. The team is coached by Barb Weinberg. The Minutewomen have been runner-ups once in the national championship in 1981. They have been to the NCAA Final Four in Field Hockey five times, in 1981, 1983, 1987, 1992, and 2024. History The UMass field hockey team began competition in 1975, initially competing in AIAW-sponsored tournaments between 1975 and 1980. Starting in 1981, the Minutewomen began to compete in the newly founded NCAA Division I field hockey tournament. The UMass Minutemen men's cross country team represents the University of Massachusetts Amherst in the Atlantic 10 Conference in NCAA Division I cross country running. History UMass men's cross country has won the Atlantic 10 cross country title three times, in 1995, 2008, and 2024. The Minutemen have participated five times in the NCAA Division I men's cross country championships with appearances in 1968, 1973, 1974, 1977, and 1978. The UMass Minutewomen basketball team represents the University of Massachusetts Amherst in Amherst, Massachusetts, in NCAA Division I women's college basketball.
