Twrcelyn (commote)
Twrcelyn is an electoral ward in the north of Anglesey, Wales. It includes the communities of Amlwch, Llanbadrig, Llaneilian, and Rhosybol. Twrcelyn elects three county councillors to the Isle of Anglesey County Council. Twrcelyn was created following the Isle of Anglesey electoral boundary changes in 2012, which created 11 multi-councillor wards from 40 single-councillor wards. Prior to this Twrcelyn was covered by the Amlwch Port, Amlwch Rural, Llanbadrig and Llaneilian county wards which each elected their own county councillor. The Isle of Anglesey County Council ( cy, Cyngor Sir Ynys Môn) is the local authority for the county of Anglesey, one of the principal areas of Wales. Since 2022 the council has 35 councillors who represent 11 multi-member electoral wards. History The first county council for Anglesey was created in 1889 under the Local Government Act 1888, which established elected county councils to take over the administrative functions of the quarter sessions. The original county council did not include "Isle of" in its name, simply being called "Anglesey County Council". That county council and the administrative county of Anglesey were abolished in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972. 2017 Isle Of Anglesey County Council Election
The 2017 Isle of Anglesey County Council election, to the Isle of Anglesey County Council was held on 4 May 2017 as part of the 2017 United Kingdom local elections. All 30 council seats were up for election. The previous full election took place in 2013 and the following one in 2022. Overall results Following the election Plaid Cymru gained two additional seats overall to become the largest party with 14 councillors. The Independents, ruling the council prior to the election, were reduced to 13 councillors. Previous Independent Group leader, Ieuan Williams, stood down from this position prior to the election. The Independent council leader prior to 2013, Bryan Owen, won a seat in the Bro Aberffraw ward, having previously lost his Canolbarth Môn seat in May 2013. Amlwch Rural
Amlwch (; ) is a port town and community in Wales. It is situated on the north coast of the Isle of Anglesey, on the A5025 which connects it to Holyhead and to Menai Bridge. As well as Amlwch town and Amlwch Port, other settlements within the community include Burwen, Porthllethog/ Bull Bay and Pentrefelin. The town has a beach in Llaneilian, and it has significant coastal cliffs. Tourism is an important element of the local economy. At one time it was a booming mining town that became the centre of a vast global trade in copper ore. The harbour inlet became a busy port and significant shipbuilding and ship repair centre, as well as an embarkation point with boats sailing to the Isle of Man and to Liverpool. Amlwch Port ( cy, Porth Amlwch) is a port village in Anglesey, Wales. It is effectively an eastern suburb of the larger town of Amlwch. Between the 1991 Census and the 2001 Census the records showed Amlwch Port's population had dropped by over 1,000, to 2,628. Anglesey County Council were unsure why the population had dropped (or even whether it had been miscounted). Isle Of Anglesey Electoral Boundary Changes 2012
The Isle of Anglesey electoral boundary changes in 2012 reduced the numbers of electoral wards to the Isle of Anglesey County Council from 40 to 11. This led to the postponement of local government elections in the county by 12 months. The changes were confirmed by the Isle of Anglesey (Electoral Arrangements) Order 2012 in October 2012. The changes were based on proposals by the Local Government Boundary Commission for Wales, after a review was ordered by the Welsh Government's Minister for Social Justice and Local Government, Carl Sargeant, in March 2012. The Commission proposed replacing the 40 electoral wards, which had elected one county councillor each, with eleven multi-member wards electing 30 county councillors in total. Rhosybol
Rhosybol (meaning: ''Moor in the Hollow'') is a village and community in Anglesey, Wales. The community population at the 2011 census was 1,078. Located south of the town of Amlwch, the village is close to both Llyn Alaw, the largest body of water on the island, and Parys Mountain, the site of the historic copper mines which lies just to the north. It is to the mines that the village owes its existence as it was one of several built to house the miners. During the 1960s noted painter Kyffin Williams produced an oil painting of the village. Rhosybol lies on the B5111 road from Amlwch to Llannerch-y-medd. Just to the east of the village is the Trysglwyn Wind Farm. This site covers an area of about and is operated by RWE Innogy International. Much of the land is pasture where livestock can graze to the foot of the turbines. Llaneilian
Llaneilian (; ) is a village and community in the Welsh county of Anglesey. It is located in the north east of the island, east of Amlwch, north west of Menai Bridge and north of Llangefni. The community includes the villages and hamlets of Dulas, Llaneilian, Pengorffwysfa, Cerrig Man and Penysarn, Gadfa and Nebo, and at the 2001 census had a population of 1,192, decreasing slightly to 1,186 at the 2011 Census. The parish is crowned by its hill, Mynydd Eilian (177 metres), a HuMP, popular with walkers and ramblers (the Anglesey Coastal Path navigates most of the parish's coastline - all of which within the Anglesey Coastal Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), and its beach, Traeth Eilian, which is popular with holidaymakers and for watersport activities. Llanbadrig
Llanbadrig is a village and community (and former electoral ward) in Anglesey, Wales. The parish includes the township of Clygyrog, Tregynrig and the port of Cemaes (pronounced "Kem-ice"), and was formerly in the cwmwd of Talybolion. The area has extensive quarries of limestone and marble. At the 2001 census it had a population of 1,392, reducing slightly to 1,357 at the 2011 census. The Welsh name Llanbadrig means "Church of Saint Patrick" and there is a Church of St. Patrick on the coast near Cemaes. It is said to have been founded in 440CE by St Patrick himself. Local legend states that Patrick was shipwrecked on the small nearby island of Ynys Badrig (Patrick's Isle, also known as Middle Mouse), which can be seen from the stile in the churchyard wall.
