''Hypericum virginicum'' (''Triadenum virginicum''), the marsh St. Johns-wort or Virginia marsh St. Johnswort, is a species of flowering plant in the family Hypericaceae. It is native to the central and eastern United States and eastern Canada. ''Hypericum virginicum'' is a small herbaceous plant growing up to in height. Its leaves are sessile and opposite, sometimes clasping. The flowers grow up to in diameter, with 5 pink petals. It flowers in the summer to early fall and grows in bogs, wet meadows, fens, swamps, and along lakeshores. It can be distinguished from the closely related '' Hypericum fraseri'' by its longer, acute sepals, and longer styles. Alexander Garden first observed this plant in 1754, but following correspondence with Jane Colden realized that she had previously collected and recorded the same species in 1753, one year before his discovery. Hypericaceae is a plant family in the order Malpighiales, comprising six to nine genera and up to 700 species, and commonly known as the St. John's wort family. Alexander Garden FRSE FRS (January 1730 – 15 April 1791) was a Scottish physician, botanist and zoologist. The gardenia flower is named after him. He lived for many years in Charleston, South Carolina, using his spare time to study plants and living creatures, and sending specimens to Carl Linnaeus. Biography Garden was born in January 1730 in Birse, Aberdeenshire, the son of Rev Alexander Garden (1685–1756) the parish minister. Jane Colden
Jane Colden (March 27, 1724 – March 10, 1766) was an American botanist,Makers of American Botany, Harry Baker Humphrey, Ronald Press Company, Library of Congress Card Number 61-18435 described as the "first botanist of her sex in her country" by Asa Gray in 1843. John Ellis ( – 15 October 1776) aka Jean Ellis was a British linen merchant and naturalist. Ellis was the first to have a published written description of the Venus flytrap and its botanical name. Ellis specialised in the study of corals. He was elected a member of the Royal Society in 1754 and in the following year published ''An essay towards the Natural History of the Corallines''. He was awarded the Copley Medal in 1767. He was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1774.
