Tombs Of The Nobles (Amarna)
Located in Middle Egypt, the Tombs of the Nobles at Amarna are the burial places of some of the powerful courtiers and persons of the city of Akhetaten. The tombs are in two groups, cut into the cliffs and bluffs in the east of the dry bay of Akhetaten. There are 25 major tombs, many of them decorated and with their owners name, some are small and unfinished, others modest and unassuming. Each seems to reflect the personality and patronage of the tomb's original owner. Northern tombs These tombs are located in two groups in the cliffs overlooking the city of Akhetaten, to the north and east of the city. Amarna (; ar, العمارنة, al-ʿamārnah) is an extensive Egyptian archaeological site containing the remains of what was the capital city of the late Eighteenth Dynasty. The city was established in 1346 BC, built at the direction of the Pharaoh Akhenaten, and abandoned shortly after his death in 1332 BC. The name that the ancient Egyptians used for the city is transliterated in English as Akhetaten or Akhetaton, meaning " the horizon of the Aten".David (1998), p. 125 The site is on the east bank of the Nile River, in what today is the Egyptian province of Minya. Amarna Tomb 5
Amarna Tomb 5 is an ancient sepulchre in Amarna, Upper Egypt. It was built for the courtier Pentu, and is one of the six Northern tombs at Amarna. The burial is located to the south of the tomb of Meryra. It is very similar to the tomb of Ahmes. The sepulchre is T-shaped and its inner chamber would have served as the burial chamber. Penthu served at court during the 18th Dynasty reign of the Pharaoh Akhenaten. Pentu held the titles of sealbearer of the King of Lower Egypt, the sole companion, the attendant of the Lord of the Two Lands, the favorite of the good god, king's scribe, the king's subordinate, First servant of the Aten in the mansion of the Aten in Akhetaten, Chief of physicians, chamberlain. The Anonymous Tombs in Amarna are ancient Tombs of Nobles at the Royal Wadi in Amarna, Upper Egypt. They consist of both sepulchres and burial pits in varying stages of construction. Tomb TT188, located in the necropolis of El-Khokha in Thebes in Egypt, is the tomb of the Steward and King's Cupbearer Parennefer.Aldred, Cyril, Akhenaten: King of Egypt ,Thames and Hudson, 1991 (paperback), pp 91-92, It has been excavated by the Akhenaten Temple Project. Parennefer
The ancient Egyptian noble Parennefer was Akhenaten's close advisor before he came to the throne, and in later times served as his Royal Butler, an office which brought him into intimate contact with the king. His titles include "The King's Cup Bearer," "Washer of the King's Hands," "Chief Craftsman," and "Overseer of All the Works in the Mansion of Aten." He was instrumental in imposing the " Amarna style" in architecture. Tombs Parennefer had two tombs constructed for him, an unfinished one in Thebes, ( TT188), which was a precursor of the Amarna rock tombs. Amarna Tomb 7
Amarna tomb 7 was one of the Southern tombs at Amarna, Egypt. It belonged to Parennefer, who was a pure handed cupbearer of the king's Person. The facade of the tomb depicts scenes with Akhenaten, Nefertiti, Meritaten, and Meketaten (and on the left Ankhesenpaaten) offering to the Aten. Near the entrance Akhenaten, Nefertiti and three daughters offer to the deity Aten and in a nearby scene Parennefer offers a prayer. On the West Wall an award scene shows Akhenaten and Nefertiti in the window of Appearances. The princesses Meritaten, Meketaten, Ankhesenpaaten and the Queen's Sister Mutbenret (sometimes referred to as Mutnodjemet or Mutnedjmet) are shown in the palace in a room behind the window. South Tombs Cemetery, Amarna
The South Tombs Cemetery is an ancient Egyptian necropolis in Amarna, Upper Egypt. It was the burial place of low status individuals from the ancient city of Akhetaten. The site is located close to the Southern Tombs of the Nobles. Archaeological excavation was undertaken by the Egypt Exploration Society between 2006 and 2013, revealing that those interred in the cemetery lived short, hard lives. Discovery This cemetery was discovered in 2003 during GPS surveying of the desert by the Egypt Exploration Society. It is situated on the east side of a narrow wadi that runs southward and to the east behind Southern Tomb 25 ( Ay). It appears to have been thoroughly robbed and partially washed away by floods, leaving a scatter of human bone on the floor of the valley and across the plain.
