Thomas Lewis (of Harpton)
Thomas Lewis (of Harpton) (1518/1519 – 1607) was a Welsh politician. The son of Hugh Lewis of Gladestry and Harpton, Thomas Lewis was appointed to the magistrates' bench in 1547 and also served as Sheriff of Radnorshire in 1547. He subsequently served in a large number of local posts, including as a capital burgess and common councilman of New Radnor. Lewis served as the Member of Parliament for Radnor from 1545 to 1553, and for Radnorshire from 1559 to 1567 and 1584–1587. He avoided the religious controversies of the day, although he was part of a commission designed to investigate an altar at New Radnor parish church which depicted Thomas Becket. The office of High Sheriff of Montgomeryshire was established in 1541 since then a High Sheriff was appointed annually until 1974 when the office was transformed into that of High Sheriff of Powys as part of the creation of Powys from the amalgamation of Montgomeryshire, Radnorshire and Brecknockshire. Between the Edwardian Conquest of Wales in 1282 and the establishment of the High Sheriff of Montgomeryshire in 1541 the sheriff's duties were mainly the responsibility of the coroner and the Custos Rotulorum of Montgomeryshire. The Office of High Sheriff remained first in precedence in the County until the reign of Edward VII when an Order in Council in 1908 gave the Lord Lieutenant of Montgomeryshire the prime Office under the Crown as the Sovereign's personal representative. New Radnor
New Radnor ( cy, Maesyfed) is a village in Powys, Wales, to the south of Radnor Forest, and was the county town of Radnorshire. In the 2001 census, the community's population of 410 was split evenly between male and female, in 192 households. The population at the 2011 Census was 409.
