The Silent Service
is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Kaiji Kawaguchi. It was published in Kodansha's '' Weekly Morning'' manga magazine from 1988 to 1996 and collected in 32 ''tankōbon'' volumes. The series was adapted into an anime television special and original video animation (OVA) series by Sunrise. The special and the first OVA were later spliced together and released in North America into a single volume by Central Park Media. In 1990, ''The Silent Service'' won the 14th Kodansha Manga Award for the general manga category. It has over 25 million copies in circulation, making it one of the best-selling manga series. Tankōbon
is the Japanese term for a book that is not part of an anthology or corpus. In modern Japanese, the term is most often used in reference to individual volumes of a manga series: most series first appear as individual chapters in a weekly or monthly manga anthology with other works before being published as volumes containing several chapters each. Major publishing imprints for include Jump Comics (for serials in Shueisha's '' Weekly Shōnen Jump'' and other ''Jump'' magazines), Kodansha's Shōnen Magazine Comics, and Shogakukan's Shōnen Sunday Comics. The Hankyoreh
''The Hankyoreh'' (, literally "The Korean Nation" or "One Nation") is a centre-left liberal daily newspaper in South Korea. is an editorial category of Japanese comics marketed toward young adult men. A nuclear submarine is a submarine powered by a nuclear reactor, but not necessarily nuclear-armed. Nuclear submarines have considerable performance advantages over "conventional" (typically diesel-electric) submarines.
