The Original Leap Year
''The Original Leap Year'' is the second album by Emm Gryner, released on Gryner's independent Dead Daisy Records. Gryner funded the album with prize money from Standard Broadcasting's National Songwriting Competition. The album, which was credited as a thematic song cycle inspired by the zodiac, attracted significant media attention in Canada, and Gryner was offered a major label deal with Mercury Records. She rerecorded some of the same songs for her 1998 major label debut ''Public'', although that album also included several newer songs. Emm Gryner (born 8 June 1975 in Sarnia, Ontario) is a Canadian-Filipino singer, songwriter, recording artist, and author. She has released 20 albums as a solo performer, and has collaborated with artists including David Bowie and Chris Hadfield. Early life Gryner's childhood was spent in Forest, Ontario. Her father was of half Irish heritage and her mother was Filipina. She started to learn piano at age 4, picked up bass around age 14, and later took up guitar as well. Gryner attended North Lambton Secondary School in Forest, Ontario. Following high school, she graduated from Fanshawe College's Music Industry Arts program in 1995. Gryner has two brothers, Tony and record producer and musician Frank. Career Gryner started her music career in Toronto, where her original song "Wisdom Bus" won a nationwide songwriting contest sponsored by Standard Broadcasting. ''And Distrust It'', released in 1995, was the debut album by Emm Gryner. It was released independently, and is no longer widely available. The last copies available through CD Baby CD Baby, Inc. is an online distributor of independent music. The company was described as an "anti-label" by its parent company's Chief Operating Officer Tracy Maddux. Public (album)
''Public'' is the third album (the first on a major label) by Emm Gryner, released in 1998. The album, released on Mercury Records, was not a strong seller, and Gryner was subsequently dropped from the label after Mercury was acquired by Universal Music. She revived her own independent label, Dead Daisy Records, for her next release, ''Science Fair'', which sold significantly more copies than ''Public'' despite its more limited distribution and marketing. In 2006, Gryner released ''PVT'', a limited edition album featuring rerecorded versions of songs from ''Public''. ''PVT'' was initially released only as a bonus disc with preordered copies of Gryner's 2006 album '' The Summer of High Hopes''. It was later offered as a separate purchase. Mercury Records is an American record label owned by Universal Music Group. It had significant success as an independent operation in the 1940s and 1950s. Smash Records and Fontana Records were sub labels of Mercury.
