The Officers Of The St George Militia Company In 1639
''The Officers of the St George Militia Company in 1639'' refers to the last and largest schutterstuk painted by Frans Hals for the St. George (or St. Joris) civic guard of Haarlem, and today is considered one of the main attractions of the Frans Hals Museum there. In this painting over 4 meters wide, nineteen men are portrayed, each wearing a sash in the color of his "rot", or brigade. All three brigades of the St George militia are represented, with their flag-bearers carrying flags in the colours orange, white or blue. These officers were selected by the council of Haarlem to serve for three years, and this group had just finished their tenure and celebrated their end of service with a portrait. The man with the commander's staff situated third from lower left with the orange sash and orange feather in his hat is the Colonel Johan Claesz Loo, who heads the militia. Nicolaes Van Loo
Nicolaes van Loo (1607 – 1641), was a Dutch Golden Age brewer from Haarlem, best known today for his portrait by Frans Hals. Biography He was born in Haarlem as the oldest son of the brewer Johan Claesz Loo and Margriet Akersloot. Their family brewery was situated in the Vissersbocht on the Spaarne river and was called ''De Drie Lelien''. Nicolaes' brother Cornelis van Loo, Cornelis became mayor of Haarlem and his sister Risje married the son of the mayor of Delft, Florens Pieter van der Houff. Nicolaes was destined to inherit the family business, and in expectation of a merger with another local brewery, in 1640 he married Aletta Hannemans, the rich widow of the brewer Jacob Pietersz Olycan, but he died the following year, leaving his widow to carry on the business without him. Hendrik Gerritsz Pot (c. 1580 – 15 October 1657 (buried)) was a Dutch Golden Age painter, who lived and painted in Haarlem, where he was an officer of the militia, or ''schutterij''.
