The Menace (newspaper)
''The Menace'' was a weekly newspaper published in Aurora, Missouri that developed a circulation of 1.5 million nationwide with a virulently anti-Catholic editorial stance. It promoted itself as "The World's Headquarters for Anti-Papal Literature." History ''The Menace'' was founded in 1911 by Wilbur Franklin Phelps within the first three years there were a million subscribers. It was an anti-Catholic publication. Along with the paper, the company also published anti-Catholic books and arranged engagements for anti-Catholic speakers. ''The Menace'' was published in Aurora from 1911 to 1920. In December 1919, the publishing plant burned down, arson was suspected. Publishing was moved to Branson, Missouri and the newspaper's name was changed to ''The New Menace''. It was published there from 1920 to 1922. It then moved back to Aurora from 1922 to 1931. It was succeeded by ''The Monitor'' which was published in Aurora from 1931 to 1942. Aurora is a city in Lawrence County, Missouri, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 7,432. History The Honey Creek area, near Aurora was originally settled by pioneers from Tennessee, including James D. Hillhouse, E. B. Hillhouse, Reverend A. A. Young, James Barrow and James Gibson. They were later instrumental in founding Aurora. Their descendants include actor Brad Pitt and novelist and national security analyst Raelynn Hillhouse. Aurora was platted in 1870 by Stephen G. Elliott. It was reportedly named after Aurora, the Roman goddess of dawn. Galena ore was discovered in 1885 while digging a well on the farm of Thomas D. Liles in November, marking the beginning of Aurora as a mining town. Mining of surface outcrops began in 1886. Joplin, Missouri
Joplin is a city in Jasper and Newton counties in the southwestern corner of the U.S. state of Missouri. The bulk of the city is in Jasper County, while the southern portion is in Newton County. Joplin is the largest city located within both Jasper and Newton Counties - even though it is not the county seat of either county (Carthage is the seat of Jasper County while Neosho is the seat of Newton County). Anti-Catholicism in the United States concerns the anti-Catholic attitudes first brought to the Thirteen Colonies by Protestant European settlers, composed mostly of English Puritans, during the British colonization of North America (16th–17th century). Two types of anti-Catholic rhetoric existed in colonial society and they continued to exist during the following centuries. The first type, derived from the theological heritage of the Protestant Reformation and the European wars of religion (16th–18th century), consisted of the biblical Anti-Christ and the Whore of Babylon variety and it dominated anti-Catholic thought until the late 17th century.
