The Death Of Nelson (Maclise Painting)
''The Death of Nelson'' is a wall painting in the Royal Gallery of the Palace of Westminster by the Irish artist Daniel Maclise. A finished study for it, in the form of a painting, is in the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, Merseyside. History Maclise received the commission for two wall paintings in the Royal Gallery in 1857; these were to depict ''The Meeting of Wellington and Blücher after the Battle of Waterloo'' and ''The Death of Nelson''. However Maclise found that creating the works in fresco would prove too difficult, and he resigned the commission. He then discovered the waterglass technique (infusing the surface with sodium silicate) and resumed the commission. Maclise started work on ''The Meeting of Wellington and Blücher'' in January 1860 and completed it during the winter of 1861. Daniel Maclise
Daniel Maclise (25 January 180625 April 1870) was an Irish history painter, literary and portrait painter, and illustrator, who worked for most of his life in London, England. Early life Maclise was born in Cork, Ireland, the son of Alexander McLish (also known as McLeish, McLish, McClisse or McLise), a tanner or shoemaker, but formerly a Scottish Highlander soldier. His education was of the plainest kind, but he was eager for culture, fond of reading, and anxious to become an artist. His father, however, placed him in employment, in 1820, in Newenham's Bank, where he remained for two years, before leaving to study at the Cork School of Art. In 1825 it happened that Sir Walter Scott was travelling in Ireland, and young Maclise, having seen him in a bookseller's shop, made a surreptitious sketch of the great man, which he afterwards lithographed. William Beatty (surgeon)
Sir William Beatty (April 1773 – 25 March 1842) was an Irish surgeon who served in the Royal Navy. Born in Derry, Ireland, he joined as a surgeon's mate in 1791 at the age of 18. He is best known as the ship's surgeon aboard during the Battle of Trafalgar, at which he witnessed the death of Admiral Horatio Nelson, and for writing an account of that battle – '' Authentic Narrative of the Death of Lord Nelson''. Biography Early life and education William Beatty was the eldest son of James Beatty, an officer in the Irish Revenue Service, and Anne Smyth. He was born in the Waterside district of Derry, the eldest of four sons and two daughters.
