''The Beautiful Cheat'' is a 1945 American comedy film directed by Charles Barton and written by Ben Markson and Elwood Ullman. The film stars Bonita Granville, Noah Beery Jr., Margaret Irving, Sarah Selby, Irene Ryan, Carol Hughes and Tom Dillon. The film was released on July 20, 1945, by Universal Pictures. Plot A sociologist sends his friend, a psychologist, to a local detention center to obtain a delinquent teenager for the sociologist to study for a book he is writing. When the psychologist is unable to get a teenager released to his custody, he convinces a secretary to pose as one. The fake delinquent causes chaos in the sociologist's life and home. Charles Barton (director)
Charles Barton (May 25, 1902December 5, 1981) was an American film and vaudeville actor and film director. He won an Oscar for best assistant director in 1933. His first film as a director was the Zane Grey feature ''Wagon Wheels'', starring Randolph Scott, in 1934. Barton worked in Hollywood B-movie units. From 1946, he was a principal director of the Abbott and Costello comedies, such as ''The Time of Their Lives'', ''Buck Privates Come Home,'' ''Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein,'' and ''Africa Screams''. He later directed Walt Disney films such as '' The Shaggy Dog'' and ''Toby Tyler''. His extensive work for television included every episode of ''Amos 'n' Andy'' in the 1950s, a total of 90 episodes of '' Dennis the Menace'' in the 1960s, and 106 episodes of ''Family Affair'' from 1967 to 1971. Milburn Stone
Hugh Milburn Stone (July 5, 1904 – June 12, 1980) was an American actor, best known for his role as "Doc" (Dr. Galen Adams) on the CBS Western series ''Gunsmoke''. Early life Stone was born in Burrton, Kansas, to Herbert Stone and the former Laura Belfield. There, he graduated from Burrton High School, where he was active in the drama club, played basketball, and sang in a barbershop quartet. Career Edward Fielding appeared in nearly 40 Broadway productions between 1905 and 1939, often in leading roles. Arthur Lester Matthews (6 June 1900 – 5 June 1975) was an English actor. In his career, the handsome Englishman made more than 180 appearances in film and on television. He was erroneously credited in later years as Les Matthews. Edward Gargan
Edward Gargan (July 17, 1902 – February 19, 1964) was an American film and television actor. Career He was born of Irish parents in Brooklyn, New York. He was the elder brother of actor William Gargan. As soon as he had left college, he went onto the stage and had extensive acting experience gained in plays like ''My Maryland'', ''Rose Marie'', and ''Good News'' before going into films. His Broadway credits include ''Face the Music'' (1931), ''Polly of Hollywood'' (1926) and ''Black Boy'' (1926). In 1930, Gargan played Patrolman Mulligan in a production of ''Strictly Dishonorable''. Many of his appearances were uncredited. Personal life and death Gargan was married to the former Catherine Conlan. He died February 19, 1964, at Columbus Hospital in New York City. He was 62.
