Tehumardi
Tehumardi is a village in Saaremaa Parish, Saare County, Estonia, on the island of Saaremaa. As of 2011 Census, the settlement's population was 77. During World War II on 8 October 1944, the Battle of Tehumardi took place near the village. A memorial was erected in 1966. Before the administrative reform in 2017, the village was in Salme Parish. Battle Of Tehumardi
The Battle of Tehumardi ( Estonian: ''Tehumardi öölahing'', Russian: Бой у Техумарди, German ''Schlacht von Tehumardi'') was a battle related to the Moonsund Operation during World War II. Soviet soldiers fought German troops occupying Tehumardi. It was one of the most brutal engagements during the fighting on the Estonian island of Saaremaa (Oesel) in 1944. Background The Soviet Moonsund Landing Operation on 29 September 1944 had quickly gained ground. The smaller island of Muhu (Moon) was given up with little organized resistance, as was Hiiumaa (Dago). On 5 October, the Soviets landed on Saaremaa. Salme Parish
Salme Parish was a municipality in Saare County, Estonia. It contained the northern half of the Sõrve Peninsula of the island of Saaremaa. Besides the small borough Salme there were 24 villages: Anseküla, Easte, Hindu, Imara, Järve, Kaimri, Kaugatoma, Läätsa, Lahetaguse, Länga, Lassi, Lõmala, Lõu, Metsalõuka, Mõisaküla, Möldri, Rahuste, Suurna, Tehumardi, Tiirimetsa, Toomalõuka, Ula, Üüdibe, Vintri. Prior to 1936, the municipality was called Abruka. During the Second World War, the Battle of Tehumardi took place in Salme. The location is marked by a 21-metre Soviet monument. Moonsund Landing Operation
The Moonsund landing operation (russian: Моонзундская десантная операция; et, Lääne-Eesti saarte kaitsmine), also known as the Moonzund landing operation, was an amphibious operation and offensive by the Red Army during World War II, taking place in late 1944. It was part of the Baltic offensive, and was designed to clear German forces of Army Group North from the islands in East Baltic Sea, the West Estonian archipelago (Moonsund archipelago). The attacking forces were from the 8th Army of the Leningrad Front. The Estonian islands were occupied largely by units of the German 23rd Infantry Division, which had been split across the three islands and reinforced with a variety of artillery, coastal artillery, and assault engineer detachments.
