Taringa Rovers Soccer Football Club
Taringa Rovers is an Australian soccer club based at Indooroopilly, in the west of Brisbane, Australia. The club was founded in 1949 by Jack Speare and Ernie Dixon. The club started with one junior team, playing out of Moore Park, Indooroopilly and moved to the Indooroopilly Recreation Reserve (now named Jack Speare Park) at Fairley Street Indooroopilly, in 1955. Jack Speare Park
Jack Speare Park, formerly known as the Indooroopilly Recreation Reserve ('The Rec'), was named for one of the founders of the Taringa Rovers Soccer Football Club (soccer) and Taringa Rovers Cricket Club. The ground is bounded by Fairley Street, Lambert and Carnarvon Roads at Indooroopilly, and features two football fields, junior fields, a turf cricket pitch, dressing rooms and licensed club house. The field was named by former Brisbane Lord Mayor Sallyanne Atkinson in the late 1980s, to honour Mr Speare's contributions to football and the local community. The earliest known records of regular soccer games in Brisbane date from the early 1880s, when a group comprising mostly Scottish immigrants commenced playing at Queen's Park, adjacent to Alice and Edward Streets in the city (now part of the City Botanic Gardens) and vacant land in Melbourne Street South Brisbane, between Grey and Stanley Streets. This group of players subsequently formed the Anglo-Queensland Football Association in early 1884, and commenced playing fixtures at the sports field behind the Pineapple Hotel, in Main Street Kangaroo Point, and at Queen's Park, in June 1884.
