Tangiers (band)
Tangiers was a Canadian indie rock band founded in 2003 and based in Toronto, Ontario. History In 2003, Tangiers included drummer Marco Moniz, Josh Reichmann (vocals/guitars) and, fresh from The Deadly Snakes, James Sayce (vocals/bass) and guitarist Yuri Didrichsons. In March 2003, the released their debut album ''Hot New Spirit'', with the songs "Keep the Living Bodies Warm", "Return to the Ship", and "Ca Va Cool" pushing it to the top of the campus and community radio charts. In 2009, ''Maclean's'' magazine named ''Hot New Spirit'' one of the top-ten Canadian albums of the decade. Despite radio success, widespread critical praise, and a reputation for being a high-energy party band, Tangier failed to capture live-audience attention, with a ''Spin Magazine'' reporter citing "booze-fueled performances" as a possible cause. Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock". One of the primary scenes of the movement was Dunedin, where Dunedin sound, a cultural scene based around a convergence of noise pop and jangle became popular among the city's University of Otago, large student population. Frenchkiss Records is an independent record label based in New York City. The label was started in 1999 by Syd Butler, bassist and founder of Les Savy Fav. The label's first purpose was to release Les Savy Fav's second album '' The Cat and The Cobra'', but has since been the label responsible for discovering a varying array of artists such as The Hold Steady, The Antlers, The Dodos, Local Natives and Passion Pit. The label has recently added a music publishing side as well, Frenchkiss Publishing. The company was acquired by The Orchard in September 2014. The Deadly Snakes
The Deadly Snakes were a Canadian indie rock band influenced by garage rock, folk rock, and early R&B. History Formed in Toronto in 1996, the band's final line-up consisted of André Ethier on vocals and guitars, Matthew Carlson on guitar, trumpet and bass, Chad Ross on guitar, bass and mandolin, Jeremi Madsen on guitar, bass, saxophone and percussion, Max McCabe-Lokos (using the stage name ''Age of Danger'') on piano, organ and percussion, and Andrew "Gunn" Moszynski on guitar and drums. Earlier versions of the band included Carson Binks (now of San Francisco's Genghis Khan) on saxophone, and - at different times - Yuri Didrichsons, James Sayce (both later of Toronto-based indie band Tangiers) and Randy Ray on bass. Josh Reichmann
Josh Reichmann is a Canadian indie rock singer-songwriter and filmmaker. Biography Formerly associated with the band Tangiers, since that band's breakup he has performed under the stage name Jewish Legend. He released his debut album as Jewish Legend, ''Telepathy Now!'', in 2006. Tangiers first record – ''Hot New Spirits'' was named in the top 10 Canadian records of the decade by ''Macleans Magazine. His song "Tigris River" reached number one on CBC Radio 3's weekly chart show, ''The R3-30'', in January 2007. He went on to release the 2008 ''Life is Legal'' EP as Josh Reichmann Oracle Band and followed this with the full-length ''Crazy Power'' in 2009, both on the Paper Bag Records label. North By Northeast
North by Northeast (or NXNE) is an annual music and arts festival held each June in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The festival's main focus is live music, but it also includes an eSports gaming tournament, comedy, a conversations series, a flea market and more. The festival events happen in a variety venues with free events on Canada's largest street, Yonge Street with events on the Street and in Yonge Dundas Square. In addition to full-time staff, the festival also has about 1,000 volunteers in festival operations.
