Tamsweg District
Bezirk Tamsweg is an administrative district ('' Bezirk'') in the federal state of Salzburg, Austria. It is congruent with the Lungau region (). The administrative centre of the district is Tamsweg. Geography The area of the Lungau plateau is 1,019.69 km², with a population of 21,283 (May 15, 2001), and population density 21 persons per km². It is located within the Central Eastern Alps, confined by the Hohe Tauern (High Tauern) range in the west, the Niedere Tauern (Low Tauern) in the north, and the Gurktal Alps ( Nock Mountains) in the south. The region is separated from the Salzburg Pongau region by the Radstädter Tauern Pass crossing the Niedere Tauern. In the south, the Katschberg Pass road leads to the neighbouring state of Carinthia. Radstädter Tauern Pass
Radstädter Tauern Pass (el. 1,738 m or 5,702 ft) is a high mountain pass in the Austrian state of Salzburg, connecting the town of Radstadt in the Pongau region with Mauterndorf in Lungau. Geography The pass separates the Radstadt Tauern in the west and the Schladming Tauern in the east, both part of the Niedere Tauern mountain range in the Central Eastern Alps. It is crossed by the ''Katschberg Straße'' (B 99) road, which runs from Bischofshofen on the Salzach River via Radtstadt in the Enns Valley to Sankt Michael im Lungau on the Mur River. From Sankt Michael it leads further southwards across the Katschberg Pass to Spittal an der Drau in Carinthia. Municipality (Austria)
In the Republic of Austria, the municipality ( de , Gemeinde, sometimes also ) is the administrative division encompassing a single village, town, or city. Transhumance In The Alps
Alpine transhumance is transhumance as practiced in the Alps, that is, a seasonal droving of grazing livestock between the valleys in winter and the high mountain pastures in summer (German ' from the term for "seasonal mountain pasture", '). Transhumance is a traditional practice that has shaped much of the landscape in the Alps, as without it, most areas below would be forests. While tourism and industry contribute today much to Alpine economy, seasonal migration to high pastures is still practiced in Bavaria, Austria, Slovenia, Italy, France and Switzerland, except in their most frequented tourist centers. In some places, cattle are taken care of by local farmer families who move to higher places. In others, this job is for herdsmen who are employees of the cooperative owning the pastures. Mur Valley Railway
The ''Murtalbahn'' (literally translated, the Mur Valley Railway) is a narrow-gauge railway largely located in the state of Styria in Austria. The line runs along the valley of the River Mur from the market town of Unzmarkt through Murau to Tamsweg, which is just over the Styrian border in the state of Salzburg. The railway is operated by '' Steiermärkische Landesbahnen'' (a railway operator owned by the state of Styria) and, with a total length of , it is the fourth-longest narrow-gauge railway in Austria. History The railway line between Unzmarkt and Mauterndorf was opened in October 1894. In March 1973 the public passenger traffic was stopped on the section between Tamsweg and Mauterndorf. Taurach Railway
The Taurach Railway (german: Taurachbahn) is a narrow-gauge museum railway in the Austrian state of Salzburg. History The Taurach Railway uses the section of the Murtalbahn from Tamsweg to Mauterndorf, which was closed for economic reasons in 1981 after heavy damage to a bridge. The section was revived as a museum railway by Club 760, which is an association formed for that purpose. Club 760 leased the line on 1 April 1982 and from 1983 to 1987 volunteers and members worked on restoring it. The Taurachbahn was opened on 9 July 1988 and operates as a museum railway weekends every summer. The route The line begins at Mauterndorf station and runs along the through stop to Mariapfarr station. Murau
Murau is a town in the western part of the Austrian federal state of Styria. It is the administrative seat of Murau District. Geography The historic town is located in mountainous Upper Styria in the valley of the Mur river between the Lower Tauern range and the Gurktal Alps. The municipal area comprises the cadastral communities of Laßnitz-Lambrecht, Murau proper and Sankt Egidi, as well as the former independent municipalities of Laßnitz bei Murau, Stolzalpe and Triebendorf which were incorporated in the course of a 2015 administrative reform. Muhr
Muhr is a municipality of the Tamsweg District in the Austrian state of Salzburg. Geography It is located in a southwestern valley of the Salzburg Lungau region at the source of the river Mur River, between the Hohe Tauern and the Niedere Tauern ranges of the Central Eastern Alps. Tauern Road Tunnel
The Tauern Road Tunnel is located on the Tauern Autobahn (A10) in the Austrian federal state of Salzburg. The use is subject to a toll. With a length of (4.07 miles), the tunnel ranks as one of the longest frequently-travelled road tunnels in Austria. Location The tunnel crosses under the Radstadt Tauern range, the westernmost part of the larger Low Tauern group.
