''Twinless'' is a 2025 American black comedy film written and directed by James Sweeney (filmmaker), James Sweeney. It stars Dylan O'Brien and Sweeney, alongside Aisling Franciosi, Lauren Graham, Tasha Smith, Chris Perfetti, François Arnaud (actor), François Arnaud, Susan Park and Cree Cicchino. It had its world premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival on January 23, 2025 in the U.S. Dramatic Competition, where it received critical acclaim and won the Audience Award Dramatic, Audience Award. It is scheduled to be released on September 5, 2025, by Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate Films, Lionsgate. A twinless twin, or lone twin, is a person whose twin has died. Twinless twins around the world unite through organizations and online groups to share support and the status as a twinless twin. James Sweeney (filmmaker)
James Sweeney (born 1990) is an American filmmaker and actor. He has written, produced, directed and starred in the comedy-dramas ''Straight Up (2019 film), Straight Up'' (2019) and ''Twinless'' (2025). Life and career Sweeney grew up in Alaska. He is gay. In 2019, Sweeney directed, wrote, and starred in ''Straight Up (2019 film), Straight Up'' which had its world premiere at Outfest. The film was released in February 2020, by Strand Releasing. Prior to, Sweeney made a Proof of concept short film based upon the script, ''Normal Doors'' for 20th Digital Studio. Sweeney earned a nomination for Independent Spirit Award for Best Screenplay. Sweeney's next film ''Twinless'', which he directed and wrote, premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. He also starred in it opposite Dylan O'Brien.
