The Barcelona Sants–la Sagrera High-Speed Tunnel or Sants–Sagrera Tunnel (Catalan language, Catalan and Spanish language, Spanish: ) also known as the "Eixample Tunnel" or "Provença Tunnel" is an Interurban, urban railway tunnel located in Barcelona and owned by Administrador de Infraestructuras Ferroviarias, Adif. The tunnel, which connects Barcelona Sants railway station, Barcelona–Sants station to the future Sagrera railway station, Barcelona-Sagrera station, connects the Madrid–Barcelona high-speed rail line to the Perpignan–Barcelona high-speed rail line. It was inaugurated on January 8, 2013, along with the section between Barcelona–Sants and Figueres–Vilafant railway station, Figueres-Vilafant on the Madrid-Barcelona-France high-speed line. Barcelona Sants Railway Station
Barcelona Sants is the main railway station in Barcelona, owned by Adif, the railway infrastructure agency of Spain. It has become the most important transport hub of the city - being the centre of Rodalies de Catalunya including Barcelona suburban railway services and regional services, as well as the main inter-city station for national and international destinations. The station is named after Sants, the neighbourhood of Barcelona in which it is located. New parts of the station have recently been remodeled to accommodate the Spanish high-speed train AVE in the city, which started serving the city on 20 February 2008. The Perpignan–Barcelona high-speed line is an international high-speed rail line between Perpignan in Roussillon, France and Barcelona, Spain. The line consists of a railway, of which are in France and are in Spain. The line is sometimes referenced as an extension of the Madrid–Barcelona high-speed rail line. The Perpignan–Barcelona line is a part of the Mediterranean Corridor. During the mid 1990s, both France and Spain resolved to build a high speed crossing of the Pyrenees mountains that separate the two countries; such a line was forecast to secure a 30 per cent share of the land transport market, and be of particular importance to freight movements. Tunnel Boring Machine
A tunnel boring machine (TBM), also known as a "mole" or a "worm", is a machine used to excavate tunnels. TBMs are an alternative to drilling and blasting methods and "hand mining", allowing more rapid excavation through hard rock, wet or dry soil, or sand (although each requires specialized TBM technologies). TBM-bored tunnel cross-sections extend up to (through June 2023). TBM tunnels are typically circular in cross-section, but may also be square or rectangular, or U- or horseshoe-shaped. Much narrower tunnels are typically bored using trenchless construction methods or horizontal directional drilling rather than by TBMs. TBMs limit disturbance to the surrounding ground and produce a smooth tunnel wall, which reduces the cost of lining the tunnel; it also allows for tunneling in urban areas.
