Tunjungan Street () is a street and major thoroughfare in Downtown Surabaya, Indonesia. The name is also generally more used for the business district surrounding the street. It has a prominence importance in the history of the city’s development and continues to the present day. Famous for its shops, offices, cafes, restaurants and hotels (particularly the very historic Hotel Majapahit), the street became an icon of the city itself. Though not located along Tunjungan Street, a prominent shopping mall, Tunjungan Plaza, is also located adjacent to the street. The street was also a witness to the famous Yamato Hotel incident which eventually culminated in the Battle of Surabaya during the early months of the Indonesian National Revolution. Tunjungan Plaza (TP) is a mixed development Superblock (urban planning), superblock in Surabaya and is the second-largest shopping center in Indonesia after Pakuwon Mall, both owned-and-operated by Pakuwon Jati which has its headquarters inside the superblock. Initially inaugurated in 1986, it has a net leaseable area of 170,000 m2, which houses more than 500 retail outlets including boutiques, restaurants, cafes, cinemas, bookstores, supermarkets, and children's arcade center. Yamato Hotel Incident
The Hotel Yamato incident was the tearing of the blue colour of the Dutch flag flying at Hotel Yamato (now Hotel Majapahit) on 19 September 1945, in Surabaya, Indonesia. It was preceded by the failure of negotiations between Soedirman (Surabaya residency) and W. V. C. Ploegman, a Dutch official, to lower the Dutch flag.
