Tunis Sheep
The American Tunis or Tunis is an endangered American list of sheep breeds, breed of fat-tailed sheep. It derives from Tunisian Barbarin sheep imported to the United States from Tunisia in 1799. It is raised primarily for Lamb and mutton, meat. History In 1799, the Bey of Tunis, Hammuda ibn Ali, sent ten Tunisian Barbarin sheep as a gift to George Washington. Two reached the Belmont Mansion (Philadelphia), Belmont estate of Richard Peters (Continental Congress), Richard Peters in Pennsylvania. Peters lent his Tunis rams for breeding and the breed gradually spread. It was much written about, and is documented in the writings of several noted figures of the time, among them John Adams, George Washington Custis and Thomas Jefferson, and later Charles Roundtree, who in the early twentieth century was secretary of the American Tunis Sheep Breeders Association. Maryland Sheep And Wool Festival
The Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival is an event featuring domestic sheep and wool. It is held at the Howard County Fairgrounds in West Friendship, Maryland. History The festival was started in 1973. In 2003 it attracted over 70,000 people. The 2014 festival was the 40th consecutive. It is sponsored by the Maryland Sheep Breeders Association. It is held annually during the first weekend in May at the Howard County, Maryland, Howard County Fairgrounds in West Friendship, Maryland. It has vendors of wool yarn, and judging of more than 30 sheep breeds. Vendors of other fiber-producing livestock such as Cashmere wool, goats, angora rabbits, llamas, and alpaca also attend. A virtual festival was held in 2020 caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
