Tulcán Airport
Teniente Coronel Luis A. Mantilla International Airport is a high elevation airport serving Tulcán, capital of the Carchi Province of Ecuador. Accidents and incidents TAME Flight 120, a Boeing 727-100, en route from Quito, Ecuador, crashed into the side of Cumbal Volcano, near the airport on 28 January 2002. The population of the city of Tulcán was 56,719 in the 2022 census. Carchi () is a province in Ecuador. The capital is Tulcán. The Carchi River rises on the slopes of Chiles volcano and forms the boundary between Colombia and Ecuador near Tulcan. Rumichaca Bridge is the most important land route between Colombia and Ecuador. Economy The provincial economy is based on industrial, and agriculture productions. TAME Flight 120
TAME Flight 120 was a Boeing 727-134 airliner, registration HC-BLF, named '' El Oro'', operating as a scheduled international passenger flight between Quito, Ecuador and Cali, Colombia, with a scheduled stopover at the Ecuadorian border town of Tulcán. The aircraft crashed while on approach to Tulcán's Teniente Coronel Luis A. Mantilla International Airport on January 28, 2002. The pilot flew the approach incorrectly in reportedly foggy conditions, and the aircraft crashed into the side of the Cumbal Volcano, located near Ipiales, Colombia, at 10:23 in the morning. All 94 passengers and crew were killed in the crash. Boeing 727
The Boeing 727 is an American Narrow-body aircraft, narrow-body airliner that was developed and produced by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. After the heavier Boeing 707, 707 quad-jet was introduced in 1958, Boeing addressed the demand for shorter flight lengths from smaller airports. On December 5, 1960, the 727 was launched with 40 orders each from United Airlines and Eastern Air Lines. The first 727-100 rolled out on November 27, 1962, first flew on February 9, 1963, and entered service with Eastern on February 1, 1964. Cumbal Volcano
Cumbal is a stratovolcano of the Caribe Terrane, located at the Nudo de los Pastos in Nariño, Colombia. It is the southernmost historically active volcano of Colombia and is together with Chiles and Azufral one of the few volcanoes of the Western Ranges. The volcano is dominated by andesites.Plancha 447-447bis, 2003 On July 10, 2012, the Colombian Geological Service changed the activity level of the volcano from green to yellow, motivated by changes in the behavior of the volcanic edifice, a situation that still persists.
