Trần Thị Nga
Trần Thị Nga (born 28 April 1977) is a human rights defender from Hà Nam Province, Vietnam. She was arrested on January 21, 2017 by Vietnamese security police. Nga is member of Vietnamese Women for Human Rights. She also blogs under the pen name Thuy Nga and is known for capturing and hosting videos of police brutality. Personal life Nga is married to Phan Văn Phong and has two sons. Activism After being abused and exploited as a laborer in Taiwan, Nga spent 3 years recovering in the hospital. During this time, she learned about laborers’ rights. She did not know before then how she should have been treated. Along with advocating for labor and land rights, Nga also participated in anti-China and pro-environment demonstrations, watched blogger and rights activist trials, and paid solidarity visits to the homes of political prisoners. Peter Nguyen Van Hung
Peter Nguyen Van Hung (; zh, t=阮文雄, p=Ruǎn Wénxióng; born 1958) is a Vietnamese Australian Catholic priest and human rights activist in Taiwan. He was recognized by the United States Department of State as a "hero acting to end modern day slavery". Early life Peter Nguyen Van Hung grew up in a lower-middle-class family outside of Bình Tuy Province in South Vietnam, with two brothers and five sisters. His father was a fisherman, but died after a long battle with illness, forcing his mother, a devout Catholic with roots in the country's north, to become the family's main breadwinner. Peter Nguyen Van Hung himself followed in his mother's faith. He left Vietnam in 1979 on an overcrowded boat; rescued by a Norwegian ship after just 36 hours and taken to Japan, he joined the Missionary Society of St. Columban upon his arrival there. Nguyễn Văn Hoá
Nguyễn Văn Hoá (1995) is a Vietnamese citizen from Ha Tinh Province. He was arrested and charged for “abusing democratic freedoms” under Article 258 of the Vietnamese Penal Code. His charges were later changed to "conducting propaganda against the state" under Article 88 of the Vietnamese Penal Code before being sentenced to seven years prison. Activism Hoá has been active in assisting families affected by the 2016 Vietnam Marine Life Disaster, caused by the Formosa Ha Tinh Steel Plant in April 2016. He helped assist affected fishermen seek compensation and environmental justice. A contributor with Radio Free Asia, Hoá submitted videos of protests in response to the disaster. Nguyễn Văn Oai (born 1981 in Nghệ An Province) is a social rights activists from Quynh Luu district, Nghe An province. He is a Protestant, and studied citizen journalism under Vietnam Redemptorist News. Oai was arrested on August 2, 2011, in Ho Chi Minh City, charged under clause 2 of article 79, and sentenced to three years’ imprisonment plus four years of controlled residence. Oai was released on August 2, 2015 but re-arrested on January 19, 2017. He was charged with "resisting persons on duty" and "failing to execute judgements" under Article 304.
