Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church (Toronto)
Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church is a Lutheran Church–Canada congregation in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The church was completed in 1952. It was designed by W.E. Noffke, who was a prolific architect in Canada, he designed many Lutheran church buildings across the province. It is located at the corner of Sherbourne Street, Toronto, Sherbourne and Bloor Street in the northeast of the Downtown Toronto, downtown core. It was founded in 1931 as a Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod congregation, the second in the city after St. John's Lutheran Church (Toronto), St. John's Lutheran Church. It originally catered to German immigrants in the city, and the services were all in German until the Second World War when it was decided to switch to English. After meeting in a number of temporary sites around the city, the church purchased land at Bloor and Sherbourne in 1943 and completed the present building in 1952. Trinity Lutheran Church is a historic Lutheran church at 31-18 37th Street in Astoria, Queens, New York. It was designed by John William Cresswell Corbusier and overseen by architect George W. Conable (1866–1933). It was built in 1926 and is a one-story Collegiate Gothic style building. It is constructed of brick faced with coursed rubble aplite trimmed in cast stone. The front elevation features a recessed entry with a large window above, framed by two spires with ornate turrets. The interior is in a Gothic plan of nave and transepts. Trinity Lutheran Church was founded in 1853 when a few members of Zion Lutheran Church in Cleveland, Ohio, decided to start a new congregation. J. C. Lindemann was the first pastor at Trinity. The current building used for worship was built in 1873 at the corner of Lorain Avenue and West 30th Street. In 1956, the church became well known because of the Beckerath organ installed in that year. The organ was built in Hamburg, Germany, by Rudolf von Beckerath, a famous organ builder. It was the first "modern, encased mechanical-action instrument with traditional classical voicing" to be installed in America. Trinity Lutheran Church and Cemetery is a historic Lutheran church and cemetery at 5430 NY 10 in Stone Arabia, Montgomery County, New York. Located immediately north is the Reformed Dutch Church of Stone Arabia. The original log church, built in 1729, was burned to the ground by British forces led by Sir John Johnson during the October 19, 1780 Battle of Stone Arabia. The current wooden framed structure was built in 1792. It is a rectangular, gable roofed vernacular Federal style building with later Italianate modifications. The cemetery was established in the early 18th century and contains approximately 25 burials. The earliest extant gravestone dates to 1752. Trinity Lutheran School was started at the following year. The current church building was constructed in 1954. The congregation received national attention when it was designated a "great church" by The Christian Century magazine in 1950. History In the early 1870s, a group of German Lutherans settled Minnesota. However, they found the Minnesota climate too cold for their liking, and took up an offer from the Frisco Railroad to purchase land in southwestern Missouri for $6 per acre in 1873. They decided to name the new settlement Freistatt, which means "place of refuge", after the town of Freistatt in Lower Saxony, Germany.
