Townhill is a residential district, Community (Wales), community and electoral ward in Swansea, Wales. It is named after a local hill. History In medieval Swansea Townhill was an area of woodland and heathland designated as common land. It was commonly referred to as “the mountain” and in Welsh as Graig Llwyd. The name Town Hill came into common use in the mid-18th century. After the 1762 Enclosure Act the area was, apart from remnants of the (still surviving) heathland, transformed into farmland. The origins of Townhill as a housing estate lie in the efforts of Swansea County Borough Council at the turn of the 20th century to remedy the lack of good quality affordable housing for working class families. A community () is a division of land that forms the lowest tier of local government in Wales. Welsh communities are analogous to civil parishes in England but, unlike English parishes, communities cover the whole of Wales. Townhill (electoral Ward)
Townhill is an electoral ward of Swansea, Wales, UK. It is named after the Townhill area of Swansea. The electoral ward consists of some or all of the following geographical areas: Cwm-Gwyn, Mayhill, and Townhill in the parliamentary constituency of Swansea West. The ward is bounded by the wards of Cockett and Cwmbwrla to the north; Castle to the east; and the Uplands to the south. For electoral purposes the local council divides Townhill into a number of polling districts, which are: Pryderi, Dyfed Avenue, Gwynedd Avenue, Gors Avenue, Mayhill North and Mayhill South. Singleton Park
Singleton Park () is the largest urban park in the city of Swansea. It is located in Sketty and is listed on the Cadw/ICOMOS Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales. The park encompasses 250 acres. An ornamental garden is located in the south, near the entrance to Swansea University, while a walled botanical garden is located in the park centre. On the south-western corner, past the hospital and the university, is a boating lake, as well as a miniature golf course. Uplands, Swansea
Uplands is a suburb and community of Swansea, Wales. It lies about a mile (2 km) to the west of Swansea city centre, and falls within the Uplands electoral ward. It is centred on the A4118 road, which links Swansea city centre and Sketty. The main road begins as Walter Road from the east, and becomes Sketty Road towards the west. Much of the area is hilly. The population of the community and ward in 2011 was 15,665 and in terms of Welsh identity had the lowest percentage in the county. Mount Pleasant, Swansea
Mount Pleasant is a suburban neighbourhood of Swansea, Wales. The area is centred on the main road, called Mount Pleasant, immediately to the north of Swansea city centre, which connects the city centre to the Townhill and Mayhill districts to the north. It falls partly within the Castle ward and Uplands wards. The demographic of the area changed in recent years with the expansion of the former Swansea Metropolitan University campus on the main Mount Pleasant road and the arrival of a substantial student population. Cockett
Cockett () is a district and community in Swansea, Wales falling within Cockett ward. It is located about north-west of Swansea city centre. It includes the eastern half of Gowerton. Cockett, in common with much of western Swansea, was the result of late Victorian and early twentieth century expansion. More housing estates were developed during the 20th century and further housing was constructed near the Townhill district in the early 2000s. The area now has a broad mix of housing stock. 83 per cent of the property in the Cockett neighbourhood is owner occupied.
