Touriñán Lighthouse
The Touriñán Lighthouse is an active lighthouse located in Muxía, province of A Coruña, Galicia, Spain. The current lighthouse is the second to be constructed at Cabo Touriñán a rocky headland on the Costa da Morte. It is managed by the port authority of A Coruña. History The first lighthouse at Touriñán, was completed in 1898, and consists of a single storey keeper's house with the tower centrally located at the apex of the roof. A new lighthouse, which was built adjacent to the original building first entered service in 1981. It consists of a 11m high cylinder-shaped tower, that supports twin galleries and a lantern with a grey cupola. With a focal height of 65m above sea level, the light can be seen for 24 nautical miles. Its light characteristic is made up of a pattern of three flashes of white light every fifteen seconds. Muxía
Muxía (; ) is a coastal town and municipality in the province of A Coruña in the autonomous community of Galicia in northwestern Spain. It belongs to the comarca of Fisterra. There was a serious oil spill involving the oil tanker ''Prestige'' along the Muxía part of the coast in November, 2002, leaking about 70,000 gallons of oil into the Atlantic Ocean. History In the 5th century and 6th century, Galicia was part of the Germanic Suevi kingdom. The Moors replaced the Germanic rulers, who were displaced in the 8th or 9th century by the king of Asturias. Cabo Touriñán
Cabo Touriñán is a small peninsula that is the most westerly point of Peninsular Spain. It is located in the municipality of Muxía, which is itself located within the province of A Coruña and the autonomous community of Galicia. The Cape, along with the rest of Muxía, is best known as a destination for pilgrims who extend the Camino de Santiago by walking to the Atlantic coast after reaching the holy city of Santiago de Compostela. Description The cape is a small peninsula that juts about 1 km into the sea, the narrowest section being an isthmus 150 metres wide between the coasts of Balal and Cuño. Its maximum altitude is 93 metres above sea level. Costa Da Morte
Costa da Morte (; "Coast of Death") is a part of the Galician coast. The most common definition of the Costa da Morte states that it extends from Cape Finisterre to Malpica, although some may debate it extends from Muros to A Coruña. Background The Costa da Morte received its name because there have been so many shipwrecks along its treacherous rocky shore. A light characteristic is all of the properties that make a particular somewhat navigational light identifiable.
