TotalRock is a radio station based in London, England. The station first started in 1997 as Rock Radio Network (RRN), changing name to TotalRock in 2000. The station broadcasts rock and metal music internationally across the internet. History Rock Radio Network Set up by radio and rock luminaries Tommy Vance, Tony Wilson, Andy King, David Clouter and Nigel Roberts, RRN started broadcasting in 1997 online from the front room of a DJ's house on Briarfield Avenue, Finchley, known as 'The Skullery'. Tommy Vance
Richard Anthony Crispian Francis Prew Hope-Weston (11 July 1940 – 6 March 2005), known professionally as Tommy Vance, was an English radio broadcaster. He was an important factor in the rise of the new wave of British heavy metal, along with London-based disc jockey Neal Kay, in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Vance was one of the first radio hosts in the United Kingdom to broadcast hard rock and heavy metal in the early 1980s, providing the only national radio forum for both bands and fans. The '' Friday Rock Show'' that he hosted gave new bands airtime for their music and fans an opportunity to hear it. He used a personal tagline of "TV on the radio". His voice was heard by millions around the world announcing the Wembley Stadium acts at Live Aid in 1985. Malcolm Dome
Malcolm Dome (1955 – 29 October 2021) was an English music journalist. Dome wrote about rock and heavy metal from 1979. In addition to writing books, he was a journalist for ''Record Mirror'', ''Kerrang!'', ''Metal Hammer'' and ''Classic Rock'' among others. Dome co-founded the UK's first rock radio station, TotalRock, along with '' Friday Rock Show'' DJ Tommy Vance and producer Tony Wilson. After 17 years with the station, Dome left in March 2014 to join Team Rock full-time. Dome is credited with the first use of the term "thrash metal", in an article on page 8 of issue number 62 of ''Kerrang!'' magazine, published on 23 February 1984; he was referring to the Anthrax song " Metal Thrashing Mad". Prior to this, Metallica's frontman James Hetfield referred to his band's sound as "power metal". Andrew King (music Manager)
Andrew King (born 1948) is a music manager, formerly for Blackhill Enterprises, where he co-managed Pink Floyd and others. King, Peter Jenner and the original four members of Pink Floyd were partners in Blackhill Enterprises. Under their guidance, Pink Floyd began performing on London's underground music scene, notably at a venue booked by the London Free School in Notting Hill, as well as the notorious " Games For May" concert at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall on 12 May 1967, an event set up by both Jenner and King. After Syd Barrett's departure from Pink Floyd in 1968 Jenner and King ended their relationship with Pink Floyd and continued as managers for Barrett and other British rock bands. Cam FM
Cam FM (formerly known as Cambridge University Radio and later CUR1350) is a student-run radio station at the University of Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin University. The station broadcasts online and has an FM frequency of 97.2 MHz. The station opened studios at Anglia Ruskin University and Fitzwilliam College and started broadcasting in 2012 from these locations after having spent its first 32 years located in Churchill College. Cam FM once held the world record for the longest team broadcast marathon, at 76 hours, and following the significant technical overhaul as a result of the two new studios in 2012, provided the first-ever broadcast media coverage of the Oxford vs Cambridge Women's Boat Race from Dorney Lake, as well as live outside broadcasts from Newmarket Races and the Varsity Ski Trip. The ''Friday Rock Show'' was a radio show in the United Kingdom that was broadcast on BBC Radio 1 from 10pm to midnight on Friday nights, from 17 November 1978 until 2 April 1993. For most of its existence, it was hosted by Tommy Vance. Vance also hosted a television version for satellite channel VH1 in the 1990s. This series was axed in March 2002. History Throughout most of its run, the show was hosted by Tommy Vance. Ostensibly for the genre of rock in general, it was most closely associated with heavy metal. Brick Lane () is a street in the East End of London, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, borough of Tower Hamlets. It runs from Swanfield Street in Bethnal Green in the north, crosses the Bethnal Green Road before reaching the busiest, most commercially active part which runs through Spitalfields, or along its eastern edge. The Astoria 2, subsequently known as the LA2 and later the Mean Fiddler, was a nightclub at 165 Charing Cross Road in London, England. History The venue was originally a ballroom in the basement of the London Astoria theatre and connected by stairways, so that the two venues could function as a single venue when needed. Like the Astoria, the venue was used for live music as well as nightclub promotions. At one point the venue was called Bang and was a gay nightclub. A venue also called Mean Fiddler was previously set up in Harlesden, north-west London, in 1982. In June 2006, the Mean Fiddler was sold – together with the London Astoria – to property group Derwent Valley Central, who planned to convert the site into a combination of shops and offices. Rockworld TV
Rockworld TV was a British television channel which featured rock music, and was aimed to highlight "underground" lifestyles and artists. It broadcast on Sky Digital ch. 378, and also streamed content online. Officially it was only on the air from 6pm until the early morning, although previews ran during the rest of the day (apart from a few hours of '' Teleshopping'' programmes), making Rockworld effectively a 24-hour channel. Rockworld broadcast many recorded concerts by metal and goth artists such as Machine Head, Nightwish, Killing Joke, Electric Eel Shock and Pitchshifter, and also broadcasts interviews with bands.
