''Tonio Kröger'' is a 1964 West German historical drama film directed by Rolf Thiele, based on the 1903 novella of the same name by Thomas Mann. It was entered into the 14th Berlin International Film Festival. It was shot at the Tempelhof Studios in Berlin. The film's sets were designed by the art director Wolf Englert. Rolf Thiele (7 March 1918 – 9 October 1994) was a German film director, film producer, producer and screenwriter. He directed 42 films between 1951 and 1977. Nadja Tiller
Nadja Tiller (16 March 1929 – 21 February 2023) was an Austrian actress in film, television, and on stage. She was one of the most popular German-speaking actresses in the international cinema of the 1950s and 1960s, receiving international recognition when she played the title role in the 1958 film ''Das Mädchen Rosemarie'' (''Rosemary'') in 1958, shown at the Venice Film Festival. It opened the way to international films. She often played alongside her husband, Walter Giller. Early life and background Tiller was born in Vienna on 16 March 1929, the daughter of actor Anton Tiller of Vienna and his wife (1902–1979), an opera singer and actress from Danzig. Karl Gerhart "Gert" Fröbe (; 25 February 1913 – 5 September 1988) was a German actor. Mathieu Carrière (; born 2 August 1950) is a German stage and screen actor with strong French connections. He has appeared in around 250 films worldwide and in 4000 hours of television. Carrière is also a director and a writer and is known as an advocate for the rights of fathers. Life Carrière was born near Hanover of two psychotherapists and grew up in Berlin and Lübeck. Theo Lingen (; 10 June 1903 – 10 November 1978), born Franz Theodor Schmitz, was a German actor, film director and screenwriter. He appeared in more than 230 films between 1929 and 1978, and directed 21 films between 1936 and 1960. Life and career Lingen was born the son of a lawyer in the city of Hanover and grew up there. He attended the Royal Goethe Gymnasium – the predecessor of the Goethe School – in Hanover, but left before taking the Abitur (final exams). His theatrical talent was discovered during rehearsals for a school performance at the ''Schauburg'' boulevard theatre. Walter Giller
Walter Giller (23 August 1927 – 15 December 2011) was a German actor. He was very successful in the 1950s and 1960s, when he was often seen as a comedic leading man. One of his most successful and more serious roles was in ''Roses for the Prosecutor''. Giller was born in Recklinghausen. In 1956, he married actress Nadja Tiller; they had two children and appeared together in a number of films. The couple resided in Lugano, Switzerland for many years. In 2009, he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He underwent a major (but unsuccessful) operation. He died in Hamburg in 2011, aged 84.
