Tomas District is one of thirty-three districts of the Yauyos Province in Peru Peru, officially the Republic of Peru, is a country in western South America. The district of Tomas was official founded on October 16, 1933. Placed just above the Canyon of Uchco and surrounded by three majestic mountains (Tunshupalpa, Uman Huarco and La Libertad) Tomas is one of the highest districts within the province of Yauyos. It is located on the border of the Junin department and is within the boundaries of the Nor Yauyos-Cochas Landscape Reserve ''(Reserva Paisajistica Nor Yauyos Cochas)''. The districts of Peru () are the third-level country subdivisions of Peru. They are subdivisions of the provinces of Peru, provinces, which in turn are subdivisions of the larger regions of Peru, regions or departments. There are 1,838 districts in total. Overview A 1982 law requires a minimum of residents in an area for a new district to be legally established: 3,500 if it is located in the rainforest, 4,000 in the Andes highlands and 10,000 in the Chala, coastal area. In the dry Andean area, many districts have less than 3,500 inhabitants due to low population density in the area. In some cases, their populations have decreased in comparison to the days when they were founded. Districts that are located at very high altitudes tend to be scarcely populated. UBIGEO () is the coding system for geographical locations ( Spanish: ''Código Ubicacíon Geográfica'') in Peru used by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics ( Spanish: ''Instituto Nacional de Estadística e Informática'', ''INEI'') to code the first-level administrative subdivision: regions ( Spanish: ''regiones'', singular: ''región''), the second-level administrative subdivision: provinces ( Spanish: ''provincias'', singular: ''provincia'') and the third-level administrative subdivision: districts ( Spanish: ''distritos'', singular: ''distrito''). There are 1874 different ubigeos in Peru. Syntax The coding system uses two-digit numbers for each level of subdivision. The Nor Yauyos-Cochas Landscape Reserve () is a protected area in Peru located in the Lima Region, Yauyos Province and in the Junín Region, Jauja Province. It lies with the Peruvian Yungas and Central Andean wet puna ecoregions.
