Titanium Sponge Plant
Titanium Sponge Plant is an Indian manufacturing plant that produces titanium sponge, a material widely used in aeronautics, light defence vehicles, and other applications. It is located at Kerala Minerals and Metals Ltd ( KMML), Chavara, Kollam district of Kerala. Notably, It is the only plant in the world that carries out the entire aerospace-grade titanium sponge manufacturing process under one roof. History The importance of establishing domestic titanium production was realised due to India's significant demand for titanium and magnesium alloys, which were predominantly imported from countries such as China, Russia, and Japan. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, a scientist and the former President of India, highlighted the issue in a speech at the Kerala Legislative Assembly. The plant was fully commissioned in August 2015. Establishment The successful implementation was achieved after about twenty years of continuous research by the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory ( DMRL under ...

Manufacturing Plants
A factory, manufacturing plant or production plant is an industrial facility, often a complex consisting of several buildings filled with machinery, where workers manufacture items or operate machines which process each item into another. They are a critical part of modern economic production, with the majority of the world's goods being created or processed within factories. Factories arose with the introduction of machinery during the Industrial Revolution, when the capital and space requirements became too great for cottage industry or workshops. Early factories that contained small amounts of machinery, such as one or two spinning mules, and fewer than a dozen workers have been called "glorified workshops". Most modern factories have large warehouses or warehouse-like facilities that contain heavy equipment used for assembly line production. Large factories tend to be located with access to multiple modes of transportation, some having rail, highway and water loading ...

Magnesium Chloride
Magnesium chloride is an inorganic compound with the formula . It forms hydrates , where ''n'' can range from 1 to 12. These salts are colorless or white solids that are highly soluble in water. These compounds and their solutions, both of which occur in nature, have a variety of practical uses. Anhydrous magnesium chloride is the principal precursor to magnesium metal, which is produced on a large scale. Hydrated magnesium chloride is the form most readily available. Production Magnesium chloride can be extracted from brine or sea water. In North America and South America, it is obtained primarily from Great Salt Lake brine. In the Jordan Valley, it is obtained from the Dead Sea. The mineral bischofite () is extracted (by solution mining) out of ancient seabeds, for example, the Zechstein seabed in northwest Europe. Some deposits result from high content of magnesium chloride in the primordial ocean. Some magnesium chloride is made from evaporation of seawater. In the Do ...

Kroll Process
The Kroll process is a pyrometallurgical industrial process used to produce metallic titanium from titanium tetrachloride. As of 2001 William Justin Kroll's process replaced the Hunter process for almost all commercial production. Process In the Kroll process, titanium tetrachloride is reduced by liquid magnesium to give titanium metal: : + 2 ->[825~^\mathrm] + 2 The reduction is conducted at 800–850 °C in a stainless steel retort. Complications result from partial reduction of the TiCl4, giving to the lower chlorides Titanium(II) chloride, TiCl2 and Titanium(III) chloride, TiCl3. The magnesium chloride, MgCl2 can be further refined back to magnesium. Appurtenant processes The resulting porous metallic titanium sponge is purified by Tank leaching, leaching or vacuum distillation. The sponge is crushed, and pressed before it is melted in a consumable electrode vacuum Electric arc furnace, arc furnace, "backfilled with pure gettered argon of a pressure high enough to avoi ...
