Tipton Ford, Missouri
Tipton Ford is a small unincorporated community in Newton County, Missouri, United States, and located at the intersection of Interstate 49 and Route 175. The community is part of the Joplin, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community lies on the northeast bank of Shoal Creek and is 3.5 miles west-southwest of the George Washington Carver National Monument. History A post office called Tipton Ford was established in 1890, and remained in operation until 1923. The community was named for a ford across Shoal Creek near the home of the Tipton family. In August 1914, tragedy struck Tipton Ford, when a Missouri and North Arkansas Railroad locomotive collided with another train, a result of faulty communication. Thirty-eight passengers and five crew members were killed. Interstate 49 In Missouri
Interstate 49 (I-49) is an Interstate Highway in the US state of Missouri that was designated on December 12, 2012. It overlaps U.S. Route 71 (US 71) in the western part of the state, beginning at the Arkansas state line, and ending at I-435 and I-470 on the southeast side of Kansas City. Upon completion, the highway will connect Kansas City to Texarkana, Arkansas, and Shreveport and Lafayette, Louisiana. Route description I-49 enters Missouri from the Arkansas state line on the Bella Vista Bypass near Pineville. After continuing north for , US 71 rejoins I-49 at exit 4 and is concurrent with it for the remainder of its length. It passes through many smaller communities before reaching Joplin. The Missouri and North Arkansas was a railroad in Missouri and Arkansas from 1906 to 1946. History The railroad began as the Eureka Springs Railway in 1883 as a line from the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway in Seligman, MO, reaching the resort town of Eureka Springs, AR in 1883. The railroad was extended east, reaching Harrison, AR in 1901, including a branch from Freeman to Berryville, AR. Leslie, AR was reached in 1903, Kensett, AR in 1908, and on to Helena, AR in 1909. In addition, the railroad was extended northwest from Wayne, MO to Neosho, MO in 1908. This section was reached using trackage rights from the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway between Seligman and Wayne, Missouri. George Washington Carver National Monument
George Washington Carver National Monument is a unit of the National Park Service in Newton County, Missouri. The national monument was founded on July 14, 1943, by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who dedicated $30,000 to the monument. It was the first national monument dedicated to an African American and first to a non-president. (includes 2 photographs from 1975) The site preserves of the boyhood home of George Washington Carver, as well as the 1881 Moses Carver house and the Carver cemetery. His boyhood home consists of rolling hills, woodlands, and prairies. The park has a -mile (1.2 km) nature trail, film, museum, and an interactive exhibit area for students. Shoal Creek (Spring River Tributary)
Shoal Creek is an U.S. Geological Survey. National Hydrography Dataset high-resolution flowline dataThe National Map accessed May 31, 2011 stream tributary of the Spring River in southwest Missouri and southeast Kansas. It begins in Barry County, Missouri southwest of Exeter and flows west through Newton county in Missouri before emptying into the Spring River near Riverton in Cherokee County, Kansas. Grand Falls South of Joplin the stream flows over Grand Falls, a large waterfall that spans the entire creek from bank to bank. In the 1890s a hydroelectric plant was built at the site but has since been abandoned. A theatre, boat houses, a German Village and a dance pavilion were built by the falls in the early 20th century and the Missouri Pacific Railroad shuttled visitors to the site. Joplin is a city in Jasper and Newton counties in the southwestern corner of the U.S. state of Missouri. The bulk of the city is in Jasper County, while the southern portion is in Newton County. Joplin is the largest city located within both Jasper and Newton Counties - even though it is not the county seat of either county (Carthage is the seat of Jasper County while Neosho is the seat of Newton County). Route 175 is a short highway in Newton County running from Interstate 49/U.S. Route 71 at Tipton Ford to the city of Neosho at Business I-49 and Route 86. It is a former alignment of US 71, and the endpoints of Neosho and unincorporated Tipton Ford are the only cities on the route. Route description Route 175 begins at an intersection with I-49 Bus./ Route 86 northwest of Neosho, heading north on two-lane undivided Gateway Drive. The road passes through areas of fields and woods with some homes. The route continues through rural areas, making a curve to the northwest and coming to an interchange with I-49/US 71 in Tipton Ford.
