Simms School Building
Simms School Building is a historic elementary school building located at Huntington, Cabell County, West Virginia. It was built in 1919–1920, and is a two-story wire brick, steel frame building in the Classical Revival style. It has a square plan, with a center auditorium surrounded by a circular corridor with classrooms on three sides. The front entrance has a center colonnade with four round limestone Doric order columns capped with a limestone frieze and projecting cornice. The second floor features an open porch with wood columns and a projecting cornice topped by a clay tile mansard roof. An addition was completed in 1964. The school closed after 1980, and it now houses 20 apartment units for the elderly. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. Old Huntington High School
Old Huntington High School is a historic high school building located at Huntington, Cabell County, West Virginia. It was built in 1916, and is a -story buff-brick building in the Classical Revival style. It consists of a long rectangle with a shorter rectangular wing on each end of the main rectangle forming a "U" shape. The courtyard is enclosed with three additions completed in 1951 (gymnasium), 1956 (cafeteria), and 1977. The building contains of space. The kitchen is located in an older red brick building built in 1916, built originally as a carriage house. The last graduating class was in 1996. A new facility was built to consolidate Old Huntington High and Huntington East High School into a single institution; the new school opened in August 1996 as Huntington High School. Huntington City Hall
The Huntington City Hall is the city hall of Huntington, West Virginia, located next to the Cabell County Public Library. History In 1871, when Huntington was founded, the city used a small building on 4th Avenue as their city hall. Later, a larger red brick building was built on 5th Avenue that also housed their city offices, police department, fire department, and the city jail. In 1887, the county seat of Cabell County changed from Barboursville to Huntington, which led to the county government using their city building until 1901, when the construction of the Cabell County Courthouse was completed. In 1911, the city of Huntington purchased a piece of land next to the county courthouse on 5th Avenue to construct the Huntington City Hall, using Verus T. Barnett Hospital And Nursing School
Barnett Hospital and Nursing School is a historic hospital and school building located at Huntington, Cabell County, West Virginia. It is a three-story, rectangular building measuring 29 feet wide and 100 feet deep. It features a low-pitched, Mediterranean-style, hipped roof with clay Spanish tile. The original building was built as a frame dwelling, with subsequent additions in 1912, 1918, and 1925. The hospital was opened in 1912 by Dr. Clinton Constantine “C.C.” Barnett and served the African American population of Huntington. The Barnett Nursing School opened in 1918. The hospital closed in 1939. The Trustees of International Hod Carriers’, Building and Common Laborers’ Union owned the building from 1947 until 2007. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. It currently publishes Tuesdays-Saturdays, with the Saturday edition dated "Weekend", with updates on its website on Sundays and Mondays. History ''The Herald-Dispatch'' was founded in 1909 when two Huntington newspapers, the ''Herald'' and the ''Dispatch'', merged. Ritter Park
Ritter Park is a public park in Huntington, West Virginia. Ritter Park, also known as the heart of Huntington, is operated and owned by the Greater Huntington Parks and Recreation District. History In 1908, Rufus Switzer, the future mayor of Huntington, pushed the city to purchase 75 acres of land on 13th Avenue to construct Ritter Park. Five years later in 1913, the park opened to the public. The park was named after lumberman, Charles Ritter, who donated 20 acres of land for the creation of the park. In 2011, Huntington won the ''Bark for Your Park'' contest, hosted by PetSafe, and won a grand prize of $100,000 for the construction of ''Huntington's Petsafe Dog Park'' which later opened in 2012. In 2017, Huntington put aside $236,000 to reconstruct the Ritter Park Playground. Old Main is a collection of five buildings joined together at central campus of Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. It is located at the junction of Hal Greer Boulevard and Fourth Avenue. The original structure was completed in 1868 (as an addition to the university's first building, which was razed in 1898), with four other additions that was completed at various intervals until 1907. Heiner's Bakery (est. 1905) is a commercial bakery located in Huntington, West Virginia, which distributes baked goods within a range of about 200 miles from that location. The bakery was privately owned by the Heiner family, and marketed exclusively under the "Heiner's" label until it was acquired by the Earthgrains division of Anheuser-Busch in 1994. Seven months later, A-B spun off its bread business as the stand-alone Earthgrains Corporation. In 2000, Earthgrains merged with the Sara Lee Corporation.
