Tigbauan, officially the Municipality of Tigbauan (; ; ), is a municipality in the province of Iloilo, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 65,245 people. History Spanish colonial era On January 1592, Jesuit missionaries arrived from Luzon to Panay, where they would work at the encomienda of Tigbauan. The Spaniards described the ancient inhabitants of the region to be the Ati people, while the lowlanders were called the Visayans. The missionaries recorded that there had been a war between the Visayan lowlanders and the Negritos before their arrival. Tigbauan Church
San Juan de Sahagun Parish Church, commonly known as Tigbauan Church, is a Roman Catholic parish church located at the municipality of Tigbauan, Tigbauan, Iloilo in the Philippines. It is a Churrigueresque-style church and is under the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Jaro. History Tigbauan Church, originally a ''visita'' of the Old Oton Church, Immaculate Conception Parish in Oton, was founded in 1575, making it the second church established by the Augustinians, Augustinian mission in Panay. It was initially under the patronage of Our Lady of Grace, but later, John of Sahagún, St. John of Sahagun—an Augustinian friar known for his preaching and efforts in promoting peace—was chosen as the patron. Although founded in 1575, the parish did not have a priest until 1580, when Fr. Luis de Montoya was assigned, followed by Fr. Alonso de Castro in 1581.
