Tier 1 Unit
A special mission unit (SMU), at one time referred to as a "tier 1" unit, is a designation for the United States military's most highly secretive and elite special operations forces. The term ''special missions unit'' is also used in Australia to describe the Special Air Service Regiment. Special mission units have been involved in high-profile military operations, such as the killing of Osama bin Laden and the attempted hostage rescue of Kayla Mueller. Sabre Squadron
A sabre squadron, or (in US English) saber squadron, is a battalion sized unit in some military ground forces. The term originated in the British Army, and is derived from the sabre traditionally used by soldiers mounted on horses, including cavalry. In British usage, it typically refers to units descended directly from, or influenced by, traditional cavalry regiments, such as armoured or reconnaissance units. Direct action (DA) is a term used in the context of military special operations for small-scale raids, ambushes, acts of sabotage, and similar actions. Special Reconnaissance
Special reconnaissance (SR) is conducted by small units, such as a recon team, made up of highly trained military personnel, usually from special forces units and/or military intelligence organizations. Special reconnaissance teams operate behind enemy lines, avoiding direct combat and detection by the enemy. As a role, SR is distinct from commando operations, but both are often carried out by the same units. The SR role frequently includes covert direction of airstrikes and indirect fire, in areas deep behind enemy lines, placement of remotely monitored sensors, and preparations for other special forces. Like other special forces, SR units may also carry out direct action and unconventional warfare, including guerrilla operations. The Special Operations Command (SOCOMD) is an Australian Defence Force command that was established on 5 May 2003 to unite all of the Australian Army's special forces units and by 2008 was fully operational. Australia's Special Operations Command is of equivalent status to Australia's Fleet, Forces and Air Commands. Asymmetric Warfare Group
The Asymmetric Warfare Group (often shortened to "AWG") was a United States Army special mission unit created during the War on Terrorism to mitigate various threats with regard to asymmetric warfare. The unit was headquartered at Fort George G. Meade, Fort Meade, Maryland and had a training facility (the Asymmetric Warfare Training Center) at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia which was specialized in breaching and subterranean warfare. The unit provided the linkage between United States Army Training and Doctrine Command, Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) and the operational Army, and reported directly to the commanding general of TRADOC.
