Thälmann Mountains
The Thälmann Mountains () are a group of mountains in the Mühlig-Hofmann Mountains between Flogeken Glacier and Vestreskorve Glacier, in Queen Maud Land. They were mapped by the Norsk Polarinstitutt from surveys and air photos by the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition, 1956–60, and also mapped by the Soviet Antarctic Expedition in 1961 and named for Ernst Thälmann Ernst Johannes Fritz Thälmann (; 16 April 1886 – 18 August 1944) was a German communist politician and leader of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) from 1925 to 1933. Mühlig-Hofmann Mountains
The Mühlig-Hofmann Mountains () is a major group of associated mountain features extending east to west for between the Gjelsvik Mountains and the Orvin Mountains in Queen Maud Land, East Antarctica. With its summit at , the massive Jøkulkyrkja Mountain forms the highest point in the Mühlig-Hofmann Mountains. Discovery and naming The Mühlig-Hofmann Mountains were discovered by the Third German Antarctic Expedition (1938-1939), led by Capt. Alfred Ritscher, and named for the division director of the German Air Ministry. They were remapped by the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition, 1956-1960. Flogeken Glacier () is a deeply entrenched glacier, flowing northwest between Mount Grytoyr and Langfloget Cliff, in the Mühlig-Hofmann Mountains of Queen Maud Land, Antarctica. it was mapped by Norwegian cartographers from surveys and air photos by the Sixth Norwegian Antarctic Expedition (1956–60) and named Flogeken (the rock wall spoke). Queen Maud Land
Queen Maud Land () is a roughly region of Antarctica Territorial claims in Antarctica, claimed by Norway as a dependent territory. It borders the claimed British Antarctic Territory 20th meridian west, 20° west, specifically the Caird Coast, Coats Land on the West, and the Australian Antarctic Territory 45th meridian east, 45° east, specifically Enderby Land on the East. In addition, a small unclaimed area from 1939 was annexed in June 2015. Positioned in East Antarctica, it makes out about one-fifth of the continent, and is named after the Norwegian Maud of Wales, Queen Maud (1869–1938). In 1930, the Norwegian Hjalmar Riiser-Larsen was the first person known to have set foot in the territory. On 14 January 1939, the territory was claimed by Norway. On 23 June 1961, Queen Maud Land became part of the Antarctic Treaty System, making it a demilitarised zone. Sixth Norwegian Antarctic Expedition
The sixth Norwegian Antarctic Expedition (''Den norske antarktisekspedisjonen'') was a scientific expedition to Queen Maud's Land in Antarctica. The expedition was based at Norway Station () which was located on the Fimbul Ice Shelf bordering the coast of Queen Maud Land. The expedition carried out survey work and scientific studies for three-four years (1956–1960). Soviet Antarctic Expedition
The Soviet Antarctic Expedition (SAE or SovAE) (, ''Sovetskaya antarkticheskaya ekspeditsiya'') was part of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute of the Soviet Committee on Antarctic Research of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. It was succeeded by the Russian Antarctic Expedition. The Soviet Union's Ministry of Sea Transport was responsible for the administration, logistics and supply of the expeditions. Ernst Thälmann
Ernst Johannes Fritz Thälmann (; 16 April 1886 – 18 August 1944) was a German communist politician and leader of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) from 1925 to 1933. A committed communist, Thälmann sought to overthrow the liberal democracy of the Weimar Republic, especially during the instability of its final years. Under his leadership, the KPD became intimately associated with the government of the Soviet Union and the policies of Joseph Stalin. The KPD under Thälmann's leadership regarded the Social Democratic Party (SPD) as an adversary and the party adopted the position that the social democrats were " social fascists". Thälmann was leader of the paramilitary '' Roter Frontkämpferbund''. He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1933 and held in solitary confinement for eleven years. Mountain Ranges Of Queen Maud Land
A mountain is an elevated portion of the Earth's crust, generally with steep sides that show significant exposed bedrock. Although definitions vary, a mountain may differ from a plateau in having a limited summit area, and is usually higher than a hill, typically rising at least above the surrounding land. A few mountains are isolated summits, but most occur in mountain ranges. Mountains are formed through tectonic forces, erosion, or volcanism, which act on time scales of up to tens of millions of years.
