Thomson Township is a township in Carlton County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,003 as of the 2010 census. Thomson Township took its name from the city of Thomson. Interstate 35 and Carlton County Road 61 are two of the main routes in the township. The community of Esko is located within Thomson Township. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 39.9 mi (103.3 km), of which 39.7 mi (102.7 km) is land and 0.2 mi (0.6 km) (0.63%) is water. The east quarter of the city of Scanlon and the north three-quarters of the city of Thomson are located within Thomson Township geographically but are separate entities. The Saint Louis River flows through at the western edge of Thomson Township. The Midway River and Crystal Creek both flow through Thomson Township. Jay Cooke State Park
Jay Cooke State Park is a state park of Minnesota, United States, protecting the lower reaches of the Saint Louis River. The park is located about southwest of Duluth and is one of the ten most visited state parks in Minnesota. The western half of the park contains part of a rocky, gorge. This was a major barrier to Native Americans and early Europeans traveling by canoe, which they bypassed with the challenging Grand Portage of the St. Louis River. The river was a vital link connecting the Mississippi waterways to the west with the Great Lakes to the east. Today Minnesota State Highway 210 runs through Jay Cooke State Park. Cloquet, Minnesota
Cloquet ( ) is a city in Carlton County, Minnesota, United States, at the junction of Interstate 35 and Minnesota State Highway 33. Part of the city lies within the Fond du Lac Indian Reservation and serves as one of the reservation's three administrative centers. The population was 12,568 at the 2020 census. History Cloquet began as a group of small settlements around three sawmills: Shaw Town, Nelson Town, and Johnson Town. These became known as Knife Falls after a local waterfall over sharp slate rocks, and later as Cloquet. The Ojibwe in the area called the area ''Mookomaan-onigamiing'', meaning "At the Knife Portage", as the portage to avoid Knife Falls connected the three communities.
