Thomas Wilson (composer)
Thomas Wilson CBE FRSE (10 October 1927 – 12 June 2001) was an American-born Scottish composer, a key figure in the revival of interest in Scottish classical music after the second world war. Early life and education Thomas Brendan Wilson was born in Trinidad, Colorado to British parents and moved to Britain with his family when he was 17 months old. The family settled in the Glasgow, Scotland area where (aside from three years in France) he lived and worked for the remainder of his life. Wilson was educated in Glasgow before taking an undergraduate course at St. Mary's College, Aberdeen. He then studied music at the University of Glasgow (1948-1953) with Ernest Bullock and Frederick Rimmer, where he continued as a postgraduate, receiving a doctorate (DMus). From 1954 he continued his composition studies with Herbert Howells at the Royal College of Music. Wilson was awarded the CBE in 1990. Thomas Spencer Wilson
General Sir Thomas Spencer Wilson, 6th Baronet (25 January 1727 – 29 August 1798) was an officer of the British Army and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1774 to 1780. The son of Sir Thomas Wilson, 4th Baronet, he was educated at Charterhouse School. He succeeded his brother in the baronetcy in 1760. By his wife, Jane Weller, he had one son and three daughters. One daughter, Margaretta, married Charles Perceval, 2nd Baron Arden and another, Jane, married his brother Spencer Perceval, the future prime minister. He joined the British Army as an ensign in the 8th Regiment of Foot in 1744. He reached the rank of captain in that regiment, and on 14 April 1762, became a captain-lieutenant in the 2nd Regiment of Foot Guards. He progressed through the ranks to Major-General in 1777. Sir Thomas Fleming Wilson (2 June 1862 – 2 April 1929) was a British solicitor who served as Liberal MP for North East Lanarkshire for around a year. He was educated at the High School of Glasgow and the University of Glasgow.A solicitor, he became a partner in Wilson, Clalmers, and Hendry, solicitors. For 15 years he was a member of the Lanark County Council, and he was for many years Liberal election agent for the Camlachie Division of Glasgow. He was first elected at the general election of January 1910. He was re-elected in December 1910, but resigned shortly after, forcing a by-election in March 1911. He was active during the First World War in several areas, including as clerk to the General Munitions of War Tribunal for Scotland. He was created a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 1918 Birthday Honours. He was director to many companies. Thomas Wilson (5 May 1865 – 19 May 1933) was an Australian miner and a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. He was also Mayor of Brisbane in 1909 and 1925. Thomas Wilson (September 11, 1765January 24, 1826) was a U.S. Representative from Virginia, father of Edgar Campbell Wilson and grandfather of Eugene McLanahan Wilson. Early life Wilson was born in Staunton in the Colony of Virginia, and studied law there. Career He was admitted to the bar on September 21, 1789, and commenced practice in Morgantown, Virginia (now West Virginia). He served as member of the Virginia Senate from 1792 to 1795 and in the Virginia House of Delegates in 1799 and 1800. He was again a member of the Virginia Senate 1800–1804. Wilson was elected as a Federalist to the Twelfth Congress (March 4, 1811 – March 3, 1813) defeating Democratic-Republican William McKinley. Thomas Wilson (1772 – October 4, 1824) was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Thomas Wilson was born near Sunbury, Pennsylvania. He had the contract for supplying the western forts of the United States from Niagara to New Orleans. He was engaged in shipbuilding in Erie, Pennsylvania, in 1805 and built vessels for commerce on the Great Lakes. He was burgess of Erie in 1807, town clerk in 1808, treasurer of Erie County from 1809 to 1812, and county commissioner in 1811. He was also a justice of the peace. Wilson was elected as a Republican to the Thirteenth Congress to fill the vacancy caused when the representative-elect Abner Lacock resigned before taking his seat. Thomas Wilson (5 September 1787 – 31 March 1863) was a solicitor, author and Mayor of Adelaide from 1842 to 1843. He was born in England but educated in Germany. On his return to England he was articled to Bartlett & Beddome, a London firm of solicitors. In 1833 he purchased a 3000-acre estate in Abbeycwmhir, Radnorshire but now in Powys, Wales and commissioned the building of an Elizabethan-style house on the site of an earlier house overlooking the ruins of Cwmhir Abbey. He landscaped the estate at great expense, including the creation of a lake to power the village sawmill. In 1836 published anonymously ''A Descriptive Catalogue of the Prints of Rembrandt''. In 1838 he ran into financial difficulty and decided to emigrate to Australia. He and much of his family sailed in the ''Duke of Roxburghe'' and arrived in Adelaide in July 1838 where he soon built an extensive and highly respectable practice as a member of the firm of Smart & Wilson. Sir Thomas Wilson (1560?–1629) was an English official. He is known as a government agent, Member of Parliament, Keeper of the Records, translator and author. Life Born probably about 1560, Wilson was educated apparently at Stamford School, and matriculated at St John's College, Cambridge, on 26 November 1575. In 1583 he was elected on Lord Burghley's nomination to a scholarship there. He graduated B.A. in 1583 at St. John's, then migrated to Trinity Hall, where he graduated M.A. in 1587. For fifteen years, according to his own account, he studied civil law at Cambridge. In 1594 he obtained a letter from Burghley recommending his election as Fellow of Trinity Hall. The recommendation was unsuccessful, and Wilson turned to travel. In 1596, Wilson was in Italy and Germany. He remained faithful to the Cecils, and during the later years of Elizabeth's reign he was employed as a foreign intelligencer.
