The Valpinçon Bather
''The Valpinçon Bather'' (Fr: ''La Grande Baigneuse'') is an 1808 painting by the French Neoclassical artist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780–1867), held in the Louvre since 1879. Painted while the artist was studying at the French Academy in Rome, it was originally titled ''Seated Woman'' but later became known after one of its nineteenth-century owners. Context Ingres had earlier painted female nudes, such as his ''Bathing Woman'' of 1807, yet this work is widely regarded as his first great treatment of the subject. Herman Braun-Vega (7 July 1933 in Lima — 2 April 2019 in Paris) was a Peruvian painter and artist. Although his work has always been figurative, it was at first (before 1970) close to abstraction. It experienced a decisive turning point when the artist came to settle permanently in Paris in 1968. By being in contact with the works of the great masters of painting, Braun-Vega developed the art of pictorial quotation. He decided not to limit his painting to aesthetic research, but to adopt a clear pictorial language accessible to non-specialists even though his works often have several levels of reading. ''Le Violon d'Ingres'' (French for ''Ingres's Violin'') is a black-and-white photograph created by American visual artist Man Ray in 1924. It is one of his best-known photographs and of surrealism, surrealist photography. The picture was first published in the Surrealist magazine ''Littérature'' in June 1924. It shows model Alice Prin, Kiki de Montparnasse from the back, nude to below her waist, with two Sound hole, f-holes painted on to make her body resemble a violin. Analysis The photograph takes its name from a popular French expression, ''le violon d'Ingres'', which means a hobby, in reference to the fact that the French neoclassical painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres used to play the violin as a pastime when he was not painting. The Goncourt brothers (, , ) were Edmond de Goncourt (1822–1896) and Jules de Goncourt (1830–1870), both French naturalism writers who, as collaborative sibling authors, were inseparable in life. Background Edmond and Jules were born to minor aristocrats Marc-Pierre Huot de Goncourt and his second wife Annette-Cécile de Goncourt (née Guérin).
