The Sympathizer
''The Sympathizer'' is the 2015 debut novel by Vietnamese-American professor and writer Viet Thanh Nguyen. It is a best-selling novel, and recipient of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. The novel received generally positive reviews from critics. It was named on more than 30 best book of the year lists and a ''New York Times'' Editor's Choice. The novel incorporates elements from a number of different novel genres: mystery, political, metafiction, dark comedic, historical, spy, and war. The story depicts the anonymous narrator, a North Vietnamese mole in the South Vietnamese army, who stays embedded in a South Vietnamese community in exile in the United States. While in the United States, the narrator describes being an expatriate and a cultural advisor on the filming of an American film, closely resembling ''Platoon'' and ''Apocalypse Now'', before returning to Vietnam as part of a guerrilla raid against the communists. Viet Thanh Nguyen
Viet Thanh Nguyen (; born March 13, 1971) is a South Vietnamese-born American professor and novelist. He is the Aerol Arnold Chair of English and Professor of English and American Studies and Ethnicity at the University of Southern California. Viet's debut novel, '' The Sympathizer'', won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize, and many other accolades. He was awarded a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2017. Viet is a regular contributor, op-ed columnist for ''The New York Times'', covering immigration, refugees, politics, culture, and Southeast Asia. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and in 2020 was elected as the first Asian American member of the Pulitzer Prize Board in its 103-year-history. In the teaching field, in 2023, Viet is also the first Asian American to headline the Charles Eliot Norton Lecture Series at Harvard University. Earl ... Howard-Tilton Memorial Library is the university library on the uptown campus of Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. A member of the Association of Research Libraries, the Howard-Tilton Memorial Library is ranked among the top 120 research libraries in North America and is a significant educational and cultural resource in the community. During Hurricane Katrina, the Library suffered extensive damage to its collections and its buildings. History The Howard-Tilton Memorial Library was founded in 1938, when the collections of three pre-existing, smaller libraries were merged.
