The Gulch, Nashville, Tennessee
The Gulch is a neighborhood on the south fringe of downtown Nashville, Tennessee, near Interstate 40, Interstate 65 and Interstate 24. It is known to be a trendy and hip neighborhood, and a popular destination for locals, college students, and visitors. Improvement District A Gulch Business Improvement District (GBID) was created in 2006 and is managed by the Nashville Downtown Partnership. The area is currently undergoing an urban revitalization, with new residents, office space, and retail shops moving into newly built or recently renovated buildings. On February 17, 2009, it was announced the Gulch neighborhood had been certified as a LEED Green Neighborhood. It was the first neighborhood in the American South to become so certified, and one of only a few in the United States to do so by that date. Karl Dean
Karl Foster Dean (born September 20, 1955) is an American politician who served as the 6th Mayor of Nashville, Tennessee from 2007 to 2015. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as Nashville's Director of Law under Mayor Bill Purcell from 1999 to 2007. In 1990, 1994 and 1998, he was elected the city's public defender. The Mercy Lounge
The Cannery Ballroom is a music venue in Nashville, Tennessee. It lives in Nashville's Historic Cannery building, it is located between the thriving The Gulch neighborhood and the downtown. The building also houses two other music venues, the Mercy Lounge and The High Watt. Built in 1883, the Cannery was originally a flour mill and later a place to grind coffee. Union Station (Nashville)
Nashville's Union Station is a former railroad terminal designed by Richard Montfort, chief engineer of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, and built in 1900 to serve the passengers of the eight railroads that provided passenger service to Nashville, Tennessee, at the time. Built just west of the downtown area, it was spanned by a viaduct adjacent to the station and positioned to the east and above a natural railroad cut, through which most of the tracks in the area were routed. The station was also used by streetcars prior to their discontinuance in Nashville in 1941. It ceased train operation in 1979, and lay abandoned until opening as a hotel in 1986.
