The Esplanade, also known as Esplanade Mall, is a suburban shopping mall located in the New Orleans suburb of Kenner, Louisiana, United States. Its anchors are Dillard's Clearance Center, 3.6.5+ by image, Target, and Regal Cinemas' Regal Grand Esplanade & GPX. Its former anchors are D. H. Holmes, Macy's (the first Macy's in Louisiana), and Mervyn's. It opened in September 1985 and was owned by the Simon Property Group, who acquired it when they acquired the Mills Corporation in 2007. It is now owned by Kohan Retail Investment Group. History The mall was built and opened on October 9, 1985. The original owners were Cadillac Fairview. The mall's original anchors were D. H. Holmes, Leon Godchaux, and Mervyn's. A Macy's was added in 1986. Kenner (historically french: Cannes-Brûlées) is a city in Louisiana, United States. It is the largest city in Jefferson Parish, and is the largest incorporated suburban city of New Orleans. The population was 66,448 at the 2020 census. History Originally inhabited by the Tchoupitoulas Indians, the area along the Mississippi River was the first land in the New Orleans metropolitan area on which Europeans set foot. René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle landed there in 1682. In 1855, Kenner was founded by Minor Kenner on land that consisted of three plantation properties that had been purchased by the Kenner family. At the time, all land north of what is now Airline Highway was swampland. Leon Godchaux
Leon Godchaux (June 10, 1824 – May 18, 1899) was a French-born American businessman, planter, sugar plantation owner and the founder of the Leon Godchaux Clothing Co. department store and Godchaux Sugars Inc.. He lived in Louisiana, where the "largest sugar plantations" were "the Calumet, and those owned by Leon Godchaux, 'The Sugar King of the South.'" Biography Born to a Jewish family in Herbéviller region of Lorraine France, Godchaux immigrated to the United States in 1837. In 1845, he founded the Leon Godchaux Clothing Co., a department store that anchored Canal Street in New Orleans for years to come. He then purchased the town of Bonnet Carre in St. John the Baptist Parish and changed its name to Reserve.
