Giuseppe Arcimboldo
Giuseppe Arcimboldo, also spelled Arcimboldi (; 5 April 1527 – 11 July 1593), was an Italian Renaissance painter best known for creating imaginative portrait Human head, heads made entirely of objects such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish and books. These works form a distinct category from his other productions. He was a conventional court painter of portraits for three Holy Roman Emperors in Vienna and Prague; also producing religious subjects and, among other things, a series of coloured drawings of exotic animals in the imperial menagerie. He specialized in grotesque symbolical compositions of fruits, animals, landscapes, or various inanimate objects arranged into human forms. Pareidolia
Pareidolia (; ) is the tendency for perception to impose a meaningful interpretation on a nebulous stimulus (physiology), stimulus, usually visual, so that one detects an object, pattern, or meaning where there is none. Pareidolia is a specific but common type of apophenia (the tendency to perceive meaningful connections between unrelated things or ideas). Common examples include Cloud#In culture and religion, perceived images of animals, faces, or objects in cloud formations; seeing faces in inanimate objects; or lunar pareidolia like the Man in the Moon or the Moon rabbit. ''The Fruit Basket'' or ''Reversible Head with a Fruit Basket'' is a c.1590 oil-on-panel still life by the Italian painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo. It is held in the French & Company collection, in New York. When inverted, it shows an anthropomorphic head by pareidolia. The same painter also produced '' The Cook'' and '' The Gardener''. Arcimboldo's reversible fruit basket painting is an early example of the fruit still life genre. It may have been the inspiration for Caravaggio's painting ''Boy with a Basket of Fruit''.
