The City (1926 Film)
''The City'' is a 1926 American silent romantic drama film produced and released by the Fox Film Corporation. It was directed by Roy William Neill and is based on Clyde Fitch's 1909 Broadway play. A previous film on Fitch's play appeared in 1916. This version updated the story to contemporary 1926. Plot After the death of George Rand Sr., the family breadwinner, a former criminal who has honestly rebuilt his life, his family members move to the city, where George Rand Junior soon finds himself running for mayor. The wife, on the other hand, neglects the family to pursue her social ambitions while young Cicely is tricked by Hannock, a drug addict who is responsible for the death of old Rand. Knowing the dead man's background, Hannock now blackmails George, his son, who eventually gives up his political ambitions and confronts the blackmailer. Roy William Neill
Roy William Neill (born Roland de Gostrie, 4 September 1887 – 14 December 1946) was an Irish-born American film director best known for producing and directing almost all of the Sherlock Holmes (1939 film series), Sherlock Holmes films starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, made between 1943 and 1946 and released by Universal Pictures. Biography With his father as the captain, Roy William Neill was List of people born at sea, born on a ship off the coast of Ireland. Melbourne MacDowell
Willet Melbourne MacDowell (November 22, 1856 – February 18, 1941) was an American stage and screen actor. He was the second husband of famed stage actress Fanny Davenport. He began on the legitimate stage in the 1870s and first appeared on the silent screen in 1917. Biography Willet Melbourne MacDowell was born in Little Washington, New Jersey (now South River, New Jersey). He had an older brother named E. A. MacDowell, who was the father of future actress Claire McDowell. As a teen Melbourne went to sea in the Merchant Marines, eventually becoming a mate. Back in the US he had his first acting experience in Montreal at a theatre where he was a ticket seller, assistant doorkeeper and where his brother was employed as an actor. 1937 Fox Vault Fire
A major fire occurred in a 20th Century-Fox film-storage facility in Little Ferry, New Jersey, United States on July 9, 1937. Flammable nitrate film had previously contributed to several fires in film-industry laboratories, studios and vaults, although the precise causes were often unknown. In Little Ferry, gases produced by decaying film, combined with high temperatures and inadequate ventilation, resulted in spontaneous combustion. One death and two injuries resulted from the fire, which also destroyed all of the archived film in the vaults, resulting in the loss of most of the silent films produced by the Fox Film Corporation before 1932. Also destroyed were negatives from several other studios. The fire brought attention to the potential for decaying nitrate film to spontaneously ignite and changed the focus of film-preservation efforts to include a greater focus on fire safety.
