The Carlyle is a 300 ft (91m) tall skyscraper at Fourth Avenue and Wood Street in Pittsburgh. It was completed in 1906 and has 21 floors. It is tied with Washington Plaza and the Commonwealth Building for 27th tallest building in the city. History This 1906 neo-classical building was originally the Union National Bank Building, designed by the architectural firm of MacClure & Spahr. Benno Janssen, who was employed by that firm, had a key role in its design. Union National Bank later became Integra Bank and vacated the building. After many years of relatively low occupancy rates, the structure was converted into condominiums in 2006. Frick Building
The Frick Building is one of the major distinctive and recognizable features of Downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. The tower was built by and is named for Henry Clay Frick, an industrialist coke producer who created a portfolio of commercial buildings in Pittsburgh. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The tower was built next to a building owned by his business partner-turned-rival Andrew Carnegie, on the site of Saint Peter Episcopal Church. Frick, who feuded with Carnegie after they split as business associates, had the building designed to be taller than Carnegie's in order to encompass it in constant shadow. Integra Financial Corporation was a Pittsburgh-based bank that was eventually acquired by National City Corp. in May 1996 as one of National City's first attempts at becoming a major powerhouse in American banking. MacClure & Spahr
MacClure & Spahr was an architectural firm based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania which was active from 1901 to 1922. Several of the firm's buildings have received historic designations. The firm was a partnership between Colbert Anderson MacClure (1879–1912) and Albert Hubbard Spahr (1873–1966), both of whom had studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Benno Janssen, another notable Pittsburgh architect, began his career at MacClure & Spahr before starting his own firm. History MacClure and Spahr met while working for Peabody & Stearns in Boston. MacClure was sent to Pittsburgh around 1897 to supervise construction of the Joseph Horne Company department store and other projects. The Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation (PHLF) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1964 to support the preservation of historic buildings and neighborhoods in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. In 1966, PHLF established the Revolving Fund for Preservation with a $100,000 grant from the Sarah Scaife Foundation. Benno Janssen
Benno Janssen (March 12, 1874 – October 14, 1964) was an American architect. Childhood, education and career Benno Janssen was born in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Oscar Janssen and Thekla Susenbeth. Janssen studied at the University of Kansas. In 1899, he began working in architecture in Boston, Massachusetts. He also continued his studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1902, Janssen headed for Paris, France, and further studied at the École des Beaux-Arts. In 1905, he returned to the United States to work in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for the architectural firm MacClure & Spahr. Janssen left that firm, along with Franklin Abbott, to form their own partnership in 1906, Janssen & Abbott, which remained active until Abbott's retirement in 1918.
